Hello all,

I am Beth, I am 22+5 weeks pregnant with our first child; little girl called Isla.

I was diagnosed as having gestational diabetes yesterday and am going for a chat with midwife tomorrow. I am a nurse so i know what this means for my body and its future, but not so much the baby and how the pregnancy will continue on..(induction, further scans, who looks after my care now etc etc)

i just wanted to see if any of you lovely ladies are due around May time have also been diagnosed with GDM as it would be really good to catch up with you all and see how your getting on and how our pregnancies progress through?

I know a lot of you may not have had your OGTT's yet as they don't normally do it if indicated till 28weeks but i was so symptomatic and luckily as i am a nurse in a GP surgery had access to things like urine dipsticks where i could test myself. I urgently spoke to our surgery midwife who managed to book me urgently for the test, hence why i am diagnosed slightly earlier.

anyway would be good to chat to some others in similar situaitons.

Beth. x

Hi Beth,
I have GD but I'm not due until July.

hey Laura,

how are you getting on with it??

your diagnosed quite early then!! a bit like me, i was diagnosed at 21+6, and i saw the GD midwife this morning, all seems quite scary but manageable also.. getting in to the habit of pricking my fingers 6 x a day!! :-(

x

I'm doing ok I suppose, it's all a bit hard to get used to but I'm getting there. I hate pricking my fingers so much every day, but it has to be done. This is only my second full day, and so far I have only had 2 high readings, and even then it was only 0.2 above normal, so I'm hoping I'm doing well. I'm back at the hospital on Tuesday week, so we'll see what they say then.

How are you getting on? I think my fingers are going to run out of blood. :)

yeah me too!!

i try and alternate between sides of the finger and in th middle of them but it is hard. when i'm typing all day as well it kinda hurts. still never mind, once they have reviewed us in clinic we won't need to do it as much! fingers crossed anyway.

Your readings sounds god though, mine have been good too, apart from sat when i had a macdonalds! i gave in to temptation and felt really guilty for it but i needed it. and to be honest my readings weren't as high as i thought they would be after having it. only 8.1.

Good luck at the clinic, let me know how you get on.. xx

I have GDM as well, and not due til July. I still havent got my class though to teach me a whole lot about it, they are scheduling my appt today.

Good luck praying for baby!! you were diagnosed early too then! good luck with you appointment. x

Have any of you been for your next appointment after 2 weeks yet? Do you know if the doctor will check my meter for the results of just have a look at my diary? I hope he takes my word for it and doesn't check because my DH likes to play with it, I don't want the doc asking why there are so many readings.

Hey ladies I was just told I have Gd and low iron what kind diet should I start? I've never had either with my 2 previous pregnancies. Will there be more test like more scans or blood work done? Will I be allowed to go full term and deliver vaginally? Does everyone have to do finger pricks with GD? Will they provide me with a meter if so? Oh yea I was put on iron pills today, but dont go back to see my dr. the feb, 1st.

Yes, I was diagnosed very early @ 11 weeks. I have chronic pancreatitis and a strong family history on both sides. But I go Tuesday to a diabetes class. They are going to teach me all about my meter, and she told me that the dr faxed her a prescription but she didn't have it on hand, so I'm yet to find out if I'm gonna be on insulin injection or maybe metformin tablets. So I don't know a whole lot about it just yet. But I'll know Tuesday. I'll update you then!

For those of you have have a meter to test yourselves before and after every meal, what have your readings been like? I've just had my highest reading of 8.1 after dinner, ok so I had a chinese and a tin of pepsi max, but I'm worried it's too high.

hi laura -
for what you ate i'm pretty sure 8.1 is fine, i mean its higher than the perfect below 7.9 but if you say that you had chinese and pepsi they'll understand. you can't be perfect all the time. and a little bit of what you fancy does you good. i had some ice cream, i just had to have a mcflurry, but i was good and had no chocolately bits in it - my sugars were only 8.2 after that, so you can be a little bit naughty sometimes.

i had my check up last wed - all went ok. have to go back in 2 weeks for another check up. just diet controlled at mo, but they still think at 28 weeks it will al go wrong and i'll need the tablets! i was waiting around for 2 hours just to called, theres me thinking finally, but that was for my BP to be done, then i was sat in the sub waiting area for another 1 hour. So boring..!! its shared with the old ladies gynae clinic so the mags were all saga and gardeners world - will remember to take a book next time!! tip for anyone thats not been yet?? however this may happen just in southampton!

and for the lady asking about whether the drs check your meters - so sorry your name just went totally out of my head. anyway i an pretty much guarantee you your dr won't check, half of them don't even know how to use one themselves and thats coming from the nurse inside me!

anyway mine just checked my diary, pretty naughty too really as some people must just make them up. i don't know why you would as you are doing it for health of your baby but still..

hope you got on ok at the docs!!

update us all soon. xx
