I have just been diagnosed with GD, and I need ideas on what to eat! I have literally eaten the same thing every day for the past week. I need to get some new ideas!! I do need to keep it pretty low carb as I have found carbs REALLY seem to spike my sugar level. Any ideas?

Hey! I'm still struggling with it- very limited selection. I found that scrambled eggs and 1 piece of whole wheat toast keeps my morning numbers low. I've been having small portions of things with pasta or rice with some type of a meat sauce(like spaghetti) and pairing it with a salad. I've been cooking dried beans with ham in them to keep on hand, tuna salad, chili, vegetable beef soup. Snacks are tough for me. I don't really care for cheese and fruit together.

I know you are not "dieting", but if you go to low-carb Diet sites like Atkins or Dukan you should get some recipes and ideas.

You could try egg dishes, homemade vegetable soups, chili, wraps with low-carb tortillas or with a lettuce leaf instead of bread, salads, plain greek yogurt with berries and almonds, stirfry, etc.

I'm going through this for the second time and it truly sucks. I make sandwiches with a low carb tortilla wrap and alternate eggs and bacon/sausage with Kashi go lean cereal with just a little bit of milk for breakfast. I also found that the Cheesecake Factory's low carb cheesecake (even with their whipped cream and strawberries!) has no effect on my levels, so that's good for a sweet treat.

Thank you for the tips ladies!! I'm trying to come up with some new ideas, I've been so bored with my diet that I've just been skipping snacks and things and I know that's not good. I lost 4 lbs this past week, and the nurses are scolding me. :dohh:

Some snacks I've tried (2 carbs and a protein):

greek yogurt (oikos or kroger generic brand)
apple (or peach, or serving of red grapes)

natures valley protein bar (only the one that says protein in big letters)
apple/peach/grapes

whole wheat crackets w/peanut butter (snack aisle, those 6 packs of cracker sandwiches - about 4 is 2 carbs and enough protein but I typically eat all 6 with no problem)

frozen fudge pop
cup of milk

For dinners, I eat out a lot because of my work shift but a 6' subway sub is usually 2-3 carbs depending on which one so I usually get wheat bread with roast beef w/veggies or a meatball sub with cheese or sometimes one of the chicken ones. I also go to chick-fil-a and get the chargrilled sandwich with a fruit cup instead of fries and a diet coke. Waffle House has become a recent favorite of mine, I get the fiesta omlette with wheat toast and hash browns.

For actual cooked dinners at home, aim for whole wheat pasta/rice or maybe sweet potatoes just make sure they aren't lathered in syrup from a can. I use margarine and splenda to sweeten mine.

I make a chicken chile in the crock pot that seems to work as well.

hope that helps :)

I'm a type one and had it for 25 years, diabetes.co.uk you will find lots of ideas on there and there is a forum for your type of diabetes in pregnancy, some foods you can play around with that are low/no carbs are.....eggs, chicken, pork, bacon, beef, salad products, vegetables (not potatoes) cheeses, so for example yopu could have a nice chicken and bacon salad and there would be no carbs, sauces that have none to go on saad are mayo and saad cream, there are lots of variations you can try....have a play around, I know its hard but you don't have long to put up with it, pasta and rice hold lots of carbs by the way and will last upto 8hrs in your system xx

make sure you do eat some carbs tho as very little can also make you ill! i try to balance them out with protein.
