gestational diabetes?

Ive got to have a test for it, but im not sure when as my midwife hasn't told me, i was wondering if anyone else has had it and could tell me what sort of happens.. i know its a blood test but other than that ive not got a clue? is it like the blood tests you have after your 12 week scan? xx

Nope.

You go in, drink a very sugary drink, and then wait either an hour or three hours (depending on the test). Then you go in and get blood drawn, like you did at your first blood tests.

They're able to see how your body is going digesting that much glucose (sugar) at once.

i wasnt very good at my last blood test, it made me feel very light headed, aww well, it will be okay, im unsure if my sisters had to ave it, but its because my mum has type 1 diabetes and she got it after being pregnant with my older sister. around how many weeks will i have it done? xx

My midwives like to have it done around 28 weeks, I'm going this Saturday for mine. Usually everyone has to have it, gestational diabetes can occur in any pregnant women regardless of family history.

You usually have to fast before the test as well. I have to fast eight hours before, so my midwife just said to come in first thing in the morning since I won't be eating when I'm sleeping!

ahh yeah my dad said something about not eating for 12 hours before the blood test, hopefully i have mine early morning, then i can have tea the night before and be okay. I'll ask my midwife about it when i see her next, thank you xx

I didn't have to fast for mine, but yeah you just go in and drink a super sugary drink within 5 minutes, then you sit for an hour and they check your bloods, I had to do mine between 26-28 weeks.

i didn't get tested for it until 25 weeks.
small orange flavored sugary drink, waited an hour at the lab and they took my blood, then I got to go home.

Sometimes they make you fast, sometimes they don't, so be sure to ask.

in my last pregnancy i didn't have it yet i've got an appointment for it this time. i asked why i didn't have it last time they said they only do it for things like if there is a family history of diabetes OR if your over a certain bmi. which i now am!
