Hi,

I was bf my son up until he was two weeks old. I had mastitis and it become too painful. I fed on demand. He always fed a lot on Breast milk. I switched to formula and he has no pattern of when or how much milk he was taking, I duscussed this with a gp who said he will be going through a growth spurt and as long as he's not being sick it was ok to feed on demand. He has recently been treated for reflux and have been told by a different doctor that what I was doing Is all wrong and he should be getting 5 5oz bottles in 24 hours. I tried this but it didn't work. If I didn't feed him when he was hungry he screamed the house down. I tried 3oz bottles every three hours but he would cry after the 3oz because he was still hungry. He might have a 3oz bottle then want another 3oz an hour later or sometimes he's satisfied from it. He might have a 5oz bottle then then 2oz 2 hours later. He had no pattern. I have tried many other ways of trying to settle him but he shows signs of hunger and nothing else will work.

Does anyone elses baby do this? He is 5 weeks old. Has anyone managed to get their LO into a routine? He sleep between two and four hours at a time on a night. He only wakes up for feeds. I feel stuck. I don't want to overfeed him but then I hate to see him upset when he's hungry and I'm not feeding him. Can anyone help?

Sorry I have no advice but just wanted to say you are not alone, my DD is 4 weeks old today and is taking between 120-150ml every 2-2.5hrs throughout the day and night!!! Sometimes she eats about 90 ml then 20-30 mins later she will have the rest, I am also combination feeding (although mainly throughout the night and mainly for comfort now).

I have spoken to my health visitor and she has no concerns re this, she has weighed baby who is thriving (she was born at 37.5 weeks) and has told me to continue on demand. The aptimil container also states the 5 bottles are only a guide and various sources on the internet say that you should feed baby as much as they want/need, so maybe you should get a second opinion as I have never heard the advice the Doctor has given you.

I have to admit at the moment this feeding schedule is exhausting as I also have a 16 month old as well, am recovering from my c sec (doing well) and my husband works nights, so I am really hoping that we get into a routine soon and that I can start getting more than 2.5hrs sleep at a time though the night. Hold in there and remember that it WILL get better.....

Thanks hun. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I think I'm just gonna have to stick with what my DS wants. It was impossible to try and ration his feeds. I didn't really like the doctor who told me too. I thought he wouldn't think that if he listened to my DS scream for food for an hour! I'm hoping it will get better. Hope things get better for you soon. I find it exhausting with just my DS. I couldn't imagine how tired you must be with a 16 month old also.x

Honestly just feed on demand :hugs:
I switched finley to formula at 1 week and he also cluster feeds! Sometimes he will have 1oz and then sometimes 4oz, it won't last forever, Jayden was the same, he got more predictable around 2-3 months xxx
