My ex wants my account number so he can set up a standing order to put the maintenance money into each month. Is this a good idea? Will he have access to my money or account info if I give him this? Also, will it affect my benefits if they can see the money going in, i would have to declare it?

All he needs is your sort code and account number but this won't allow him any access to your information or accounts no.

And the money you receive for child maintenance shouldn't affect your benefits although you should tell them, as it is a source of income.

open up a separate account that you only use for that purpose

It depends on what benefits you are receiving. Housing benefit and tax credits are not affected by any maintenance you receive but I believe Income Support is? You used to be able to get about £20 a week in child maintenance before IS was affected but you should check out what it is now.

If you don't declare the income bear in mind the FOB could report you at any time and you could end up being done for fraud :-s
