what are you ladies thoughts on this??
my mums mentioned givin LO cooled boiled water to help flush his kidneys as this is wat she did with us but MW said no...but I kno we dont always listen to healthcare prof.

does anyone give their LO water between feeds??
my LO does seem to have a dry mouth sometimes...

My midwife and HV both said to give cooled boiled water, but no more than 2-3oz a day. Funny how advice changes from person to person hey?
Luckily L loves having the water, which is good as it will be easier as she gets a bit bigger to drinks other than milk.

I've always understood it that if there is a reason to it's ok, but otherwise not to bother.

So if LO has constipation or it's a hot day then yes, up to 2-3oz (but probably less) per day. If neither of those things is the case, there is no reason to and it will just fill up his tummy without the nutrients he needs from his milk.

as blahblahblah i've always been told that unless there is a reason, like constipation or it's extremely hot weather then there is no need to give water.

ah ok, well my LO does seem 2have a lil constipation since puttin him on hungry baby formula so perhaps water will help him.

i gave my little man cool bpiled water inbetween feeds , my midwife told me too as if you think about it, the milk is their food and they need something to wet their mouthits like us eating with nothing to drink :( she was a very old fashioned MW though but i will do it again with the next one x

thanks natty1985 that actually makes sense, I just listened to wat my MW told me as im a new mum I didnt kno who to listen to as obviously advice and guidelines have changed alot since my mum had me but ill def try my LO on water between feeds and see how he gets on.
Natty1985 how much water did u giv ur LO between feeds??
other comments seem to be around 2-3oz a day at most...

Fin fed roughly every 3 hours so i used to feed him then leave him an hour and a half and then probably give him just enough to wet his tongue if you know what i mean , probably like a quater of an ounce to an ounce just so he didnt feel like he had dry mouth , you know what it is like yourself when you have eaten and dont have a drink. He was really unsettled as a newborn and had constipation and colic something rotten and out of everything i honestly saw the difference in giving him water , something so simple xxxxx

Also , i found no one to no more practical advice than my mum ! She had 4 children and we were all so fit and healthy and my MW also stated "who better" than my mum , i still rely on her now for advice as some of these new things they come out with are a pile of rubbish lol! If you get a really old fashioned MW they can be scary but honestly they dont half tell the best advice ! x

I agree- I think especially so with ff babies as the formula is the same all the time and doesn't change to suit baby like bm does.

Oh and by the way they have teeny 2oz bottles for 79p in savers that are the perfect size for water.

We were told to if she gets fussy between feeds, or is constipated or the weather is hot etc.
We have only done this once though. x

L is on the hungry baby milk and gets very constipated, poor little thing!

Ive been giving my LO cooled boiled water from the get go, never did him any harm, by the way Janine, its Clare! hope your doing ok xxx

I was advised it as ok from my doctor because Ella had constipation when she was little and we were in the middle of a hot summer.

If LO is constipated on hungry baby, try adding an extra half ounce of water to the bottle when you make it up. So if you normally give her 5oz, put 5 1/2 oz of water in and your usual 5 scoops of formula. You can do this with all her bottles, and the extra fluid should do the trick.

I've been giving my LO water (also herbal teas, such as camomile, which has a soothing effect) between feeds since she was NB, because in the summer here, she was getting very hydrated. When she was NB, I would make a 5oz bottle, and give it to her whenever she needed it. If she wanted it all, she would have it all, but usually she would only want about 3oz a day.

Now she's going off her milk, I have to keep her fluids up, so I give her at least 5oz of water each day aside from her milk and solids. Babies my LO's age need at least 20oz of fluids per day, and sometimes my LO will only have 10oz of formula.

I have never had a problem with LO having this much, and nobody (midwives, HV, doctors etc) have ever said there's a problem with me doing it.

I am formula feeding on SMA. My HV said to give her as much cool boiled water as she wants before each feed as this will help wind, bring up burps and make her tummy more comfortable. This mornings feed she took 50ml water than had her 140 ml milk. She is 4 weeks old. Hope this helps.
