We are starting to get ready to do BLW with our little boy. I am gluten intolerant. I asked my doctor about giving the little man gluten and he said that I should. What are you mommies doing?

I am hesitant to give it to him. Sometimes he gets a little blood in his diaper (again the doctor sort of brushed off my concerns for that too, saying his little bum was probably sore, I really don't think it was). I am quite strict with avoiding gluten but a few times I ate some nuts that said "may contain wheat" and that seems to coincide with the blood.

Also, I have noticed he gets a little blood in his diaper if I eat grapes. Grapes are something that I was told I am intolerant to but I have never had a reaction so I am not sure. I know I will be avoiding them with him.

Thanks for any advice you can give :)

This is just my personal opinion, but if you're gluten intolerant & eating gluten free, there's no reason your LO NEEDS to eat gluten. I have a gluten intolerance as well, but my 2 year old LO doesn't and he eats a gluten free diet as well. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it :) Trust your gut on this one. If you think he's having even a mild reaction to gluten, cut it out and see how he does without it for awhile. When I suspected my LO had a food allergy (he's allergic to dairy) he had severe eczema, but every doctor just tried to give me a cream to put on him until I finally told one that I refused to leave the clinic without a referral to an allergist. Lo and behold, he had quite the dairy allergy, and I'm so thankful I trusted my momma gut on that!

Thank you :)

We haven't started blw yet, so I am not positive that he is having a reaction to gluten. I am ebf so I am not sure if he is having a reaction through my breast milk. I am pretty positive he is having a reaction from the grapes. I suspected it right from him being a little baby because he always seemed gassier if I ate grapes. I didn't eat grapes often because I was told I am intolerant so I stay away. Sometimes, though, I just wanted them :( I LOVE grapes, I could literally eat grapes all day long and never eat chocolate again. I won't be eating them again until he is done breastfeeding.

I think I will avoid gluten with Finn when we start solids. We eat gluten free as a family, well, DH eats regular bread and bread products, but all our meals that we prepare are gluten free. I will probably give Finn my bread too, rather than DH's bread.

Thank you for sharing your experience with me :)

I am intolerant and have given my dd normal pasta and bread and she has been fine. My health visitor told me to keep a food diary of what I give her when and what her nappies/mood is like after. They are more than happy with her and said that because I have the condition doesn't mean that she will.
