I am going for Genetics Counselling on Tuesday March 12 as I screened high risk for downs. I refused the cvs so my dr is sending me there for counselling.

What questions should I ask?

Oh I responded to you in another post but ask them about the Harmony test now available here and also the NIPT through PRCM in vancouver. Both a bloodtest highly accurate in detecting the trisomy's as far as I understand. You do have to pay out of pocket for them (approx $1200) as they are not covered as of yet but it is a good option now that they are available here in Canada. Good luck with everything! Sending positive thoughts, I am sure all will be just fine :)

Hi there THANK YOU for replying to me. I was just going to go insane here, I SHOULD of checked out PCRM site, as that is where I got my OB from lol Dr Winston Tam. Her runs the satellite sector in Surrey BC Canada. NIPT and Harmony. Ok I will look that up. I am going to BC Womens hospital March 12 for my counselling I will ask them about the two you quoted and OMG let me just say IF those are the only two tests outside of CVS and amnio I wont be paying it. Call me cheap BUT I will take it as a sign to just carry on and take what ever god or who ever gives me. I just shelled out over 2000 in dental work for my kids and 1500 was to a 3 year old for dental work. I cant imagine paying that to find out what wont change my mind. Selfish??

I went on the website for PCRM and I see the fees, that you quoted and OMG
ANyways, I got the IPS test done and my dr is ok with me waiting to complete it as a SIPS, but with it being the IPS its 88% detection rate but he rather me just take the results the way I have it cus I had the Nt scan and that's more reliable than the 2 bloods combined (sips)

IPS

…stands for "Integrated Pregnancy Screening". IPS involves adding a Nuchal Translucency (the 12 week ultrasound test for looking at the fetal neck), and adding to it the SIPS. This gives a final answer at the end of the quadruple screen (17-20 weeks). In BC, IPS is performed as a sequential test: this means that the NT is performed at 12 weeks, and if the NT is large, the patient is offered amniocentesis, or they can wait for the rest of the blood work in later pregnancy. This type of sequential testing performs at a 88% detection rate and is inferior to FTS (NT, Nasal Bone, and First trimester bloodwork). This means that 12% of affected pregnancies are missed by this test.

In its pure form, IPS is sometimes (not in BC) performed as a ‘combined’ test, meaning that the first and second trimester blood and ultrasound results are not disclosed to the patient, until completion of the second trimester bloodwork. In this form, IPS performs very similar to FTS in detection rates. However, it is very hard not to disclose the results of the ultrasound to a patient without a lot of patient anxiety. For this reason, combined IPS is not popular.

With this being said I guess now all I can do is wait for the level II scan that I will be getting in about 4-6 weeks and go from there?

I will ask for another blood test to, the AFP or Harmony??
