Hi ladies!

My wee boy's umbilical cord stump just fell off! At first I was thrilled thinking I could give him his first proper bath, but then noticed brown gooey stuff underneath that seems quite sticky. I have a terrible sense of smell, but I did smell it and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Is this normal? Can I still give him a bath or should I wait until it's all sorted out? I think I may call my pediatrician too just in case, but I don't want to sound incredibly silly.

I gave my baby a shallow bath at that point. I didn't submerge his belly button but laid a warm wet cloth over him and genty cleaned it afterwards with a cotton ball. His also bled for a few days after his cord fell off which is normal as long as its not a running kind of blood but rather a small spot that's usually dry and crusty looking n

That's what our lo looked like after cord fell off. We gently cleaned the area, gave her a shallow bath and it had gone the next day :)

Thank you. :hugs: I thought it might be normal! It took awhile for his cord to fall off too though so wasn't sure.

That's how my son's belly button looked as well. It was gone after a couple days of gentle cleaning.

Our LO had this as well but took a bit longer and some powder and cleaning to get rid of hers, just keep it clean was what we were told.

My dd's cord fell off within the first week and she had the gooey stuff too. I bathed her and just patted it dry x

Same as my son's cord, we were told to leave it and only clean around it with water.

My son's looked like that but it wa an infection so i'd ring your mw/hv xxx

That gooey stuff is the good stuff that helps the hard stump fall off. It's totally normal an nothing to worry about. It will eventually go away.
