Gym and pregnancy?

I'm interested in this too. I've read that some exercise during pregnancy is actually good for you but would be good to see exactly how much and how often.

I'm a regular gym goer but since I got my BFP last week I'm a bit reluctant to go but hate the feeling I get when I don't go. However I'm just a bit nervous about doing anything.

I'm thinking of going this weekend and just doing some gentle cross trainer and see how that goes

I think as long as you are not embarking on a new routine then its ok (walking and swiming are safe to start if you have not been doing any exercise previously) and even benificial to exercise during pregnancy. just listen to your body and avoid abdominal or twisting exercises. Do take it easy as one of the chemicals released in pregnancy softens your ligaments to allow for things to move and change. this can make you more prone to strain and injury.
This is what i have been told and found our for myself from my own reading, i am still doing zumba and a lot of walking, some days i just have to slow it down a little!!!

Yes, it's ok to go to the gym and work out like you normally would. Don't do anything to over do it or make yourself purple in the face. Something to get your heartrate up but not have a heart attack :)

I have been told that just walking would be fine... but I feel is not enough!

You could go jogging, but you shouldn't do too much during first tri as it can cause stress on the baby

Thanks so much, I feel more confidence to continue with my routine :)

I asked my GP this yesterday as I only joined the gym 2 months ago, which i actually think helped me get my bfp, and she said I am fine to do what I was ok doing before I got pregnant.
She said just to be sensible, and not push myself to hard, just have a nice workout that gets the blood pumping but dont try anything new or anything too strenuous!

I've exercised the last 6 days in a row. I'm really focusing on exercising right now since I'm apparently defenseless against horrible food cravings. The difference between now and before I got pregnant is that I don't push myself quite as hard as I used to. I also keep an eye to be sure my heart rate doesn't jump up too high (I think this number varies for everyone - if I kept my HR under 140bpm I'd not be getting any kind of workout at all) & I also just pay more attention to how I'm feeling while I'm working out.

I was training for a half-marathon in February before I got pregnant. I won't be doing that anymore (not that I have the energy to push myself that hard right now anyway!:haha:). I miss running but my heartrate just goes up too high for comfort after just 3-4 minutes of it. :nope: I don't know if this is a valid concern, but I'm terrified of depriving the baby of oxygen or something if I allow my heart rate to stay that high for an extended amount of time.

My doctor said that as long as you can hold a conversation while working out, that it is fine.

Yes, you can. After a certain point, there is no laying on your back and other modifications which your doctor can discuss with you.

I did weight training daily along with dog walking and it was the best thing I ever did, because when I went through a very rough labour (3 days, shoulder dystocia), my endurance and fitness helped me deliver naturally as almost all women would have needed a C section before that point.

Good luck! It's about more than just keeping the weight gain down but it can have major benefits for your baby too!
