I had my appointment at the hospital on the 24th (Ipswich Hospital).

Me and OH have been TTC for 12 months. My cycle is regular as clockwork, i've been using OPKs, CBFM and charting BBT which all seem to indicate that i ovulate as well. I have had CD3 and CD21 blood tests which were all fine, and OH has had SA which was fine as well.

The consultant has given me Clomid 100mg to take from CD2-6, i then have to go back on CD12 for a sacn, if the follicles are big enough they will then give me a jab to induce ovulation.

I thought this seemed a bit much as there don't seem to be any problems with me ovulating, but the FS said that this is their standard procedure as poor follicle quality if the most common cause for problems with TTC. I've got to try that for 4 months and if that doesn't work they then start investigations to look at whether tubes are blocked etc.

Anyone else experienced a similar thing?

Well first of all i have been ttc since Sept last yr!! After irregular periods and day 21 tests etc showing no ovulation docotor reffered me to gyno!! (sure i ovulate but defo no idea when as cycles vary, all blood test were done well pass cd21 as i know my cycles are cd35 to anywhere to cd60) however i couldnt guess when af was due so did some guess worked and always wrong as af would show like 3 weeks passed the blood work taken!!

However doctor referrred me to gyno!! Went to see gyno few weeks ago who had a chat etc about ttc, had blood taken on cd2 of AF which was few weeks ago now and now having an ultrasound scan on friday to ensure i dont have pcos..

I defo dont think i do as i have no pains or any symtons etc but they say they do this scan first before giving any medication!! They did mention clomid however assuming tests are fine from my scan i will defo be pushing for clomid myself..

No idea how it works tho, as some people you find get clomid before having any scans etc but then some have so many blood tests, scans etc before clomid..

However a good thing with you is there scanning u to ensure ovulation is happening so really thats good, cause some ladies who take clomid dont even get scanned!! Meaning they still might not be ovulating so whats the point in taking a low dose of clomid if u r not ovulating.. this is why been scanned is better it confirms the clomid is doing wot it should!!

Good luck huni.. xx

Hey hun

Bit confused - if you and your DH are both okay and any issues are currently unexplained, why are they putting you on meds?? I would have asked to have an HSG and transvaginal scan done. Our bloods showed i was okay but we were referred due to MF issues - the first appt at the FS they scheduled me to have the dye test and a scan to make sure that my tubes weren't blocked and now we have to wait for our IVF.

I'd push for the dye test hun as bloods would only show that you are ovulating but not necessarily that the egg can get down.

Good luck hun xxx

Apparently that's just the procedure that they follow in my area due to the majority of cases being down to egg quality. Also i imagine it's probably cheaper for them as well!

We've been TTC for 13 months and my cycle is very regular too with all indications that I'm ov'ing every cycle. DH's SA was slightly low but nothing too bad apparently. Our FC arranged for me to have a transvaginal scan (which was clear), a detailed SA for DH and I've now got an appt for a lap and dye. Seems strange that they want to go staight for Clomid rather than check your tubes etc first. Can you ask if you can see someone else for a second opinion?

Prescibing Clomid is in line with NICE guidance, but I tend to disagree with this common practice. It may be that giving you Clomid for a few cycles is cheaper than monitoring your follicular growth accurately -- because, to be honest, monitoring for one cycle is never really ideal. While I personally may choose not to go on Clomid but instead push for a dye test, it may be worth it to try it.

I'd push for a dye test before going on Clomid only because it's pointless if your tubes are blocked since the egg has nowhere to go.

Miss Kitty - as you said this is the standard procedure for Ipswich Hospital they will always give clomid as a first step before doing any other tests regardless of what is going on which is crap and I have had several arguements with the lovely (ha!) consultant and his minions up there. Unfortunately I don't think you will get the dye test until you have tried the clomid and completed 4 cycles. However saying that it might be worth calling the number you have for booking scans and having a word with the nurses, they are much more understanding and are willing to discuss things in more depth with you. As I've said in my PM to you I have actually managed to use them and get my next step in my procedures changed, unfortunately it looks like I'm unlikely to get any further treatment from them as I have made them change there routine for me! Good luck with what you decide to do and feel free to contact me at any time x

I would request an HSG to even though I just had one and it hurt like hell. I won't censor the pain cause every one did with me then when I went in I was blown away! I thought FSH was a measure of egg quality? Or that it did something like that as well as show egg reserve. Hmmm... I had an HSG done, haven't even had a scan and no meds. I'm all good dh has MF so we're waiting for IUI.

Hi guys,

My local authority seems to do things a different way. We have been trying since Jan 2008 with no joy. My own charting of temperatures seems to reveal ovulation, although my consultant says the levels of progesterone aren't high enough for him to be convinced of this. However he is not interested in looking at charts or discussing anything in detail.

Initially after I was referred to a specialist in Jan 2009 they tested Husband and he was told he had an excellent sperm analysis. I was sent for hysterosalpingogram which wasa dreadul painful experience to see if my tubes were blocked. they turned out to be fine.

I have just been given Clomid and am two tablets into my first cycle, and awaiting a date for a transvaginal scan, which I am relived to hear from you guys is no where near as bad as the last examination. At the same meeting 4 months after the initial sperm analysis the consultant told us that my husband also has oly 8% morpholgyy (normal is 14%) so he has a slight probelm too. We were totally shellshocked as we had been told everything was brilliant with him before and he could offer no advice on how to improve it, and while we sat there in shock told us "you can go now" and off we went home like good little patients.

I am not quite sure exactly what the scan is expected to reveal, but know an injection may take place too. I have found the whole NHS experience to be much like herding cattle. There is little interest in the individual and little personal care or empathy apart from the odd wonderful nurse. I full intend to go private if I require IVF.

yes this is the standard the procedure, i had clomid for 9 months before having my tubes checked. they prefer to do the less invasive treatments first. good luck with the clomid

Hi ive just read your post. ive been ttc for 2 years now and went to see my gp at the begining of this year who did a few blood tests that was normal so then sent me to see a gyni at hospital who sent me fo a hystropingogram which showed both my tubes were blocked and closed then couple of month later i went in hopital for a lap & dye then went in couple of month later for a op to unblock and open my tubes its bin 7 wk since my op and just finished my 1st corse of clomid.

I dont understand why they have put you on clomid before investigating inside you.

My problem started becouse ive had clomidia and not know bout it years ago, my consultant told me 40% of couples he works with have had the same problem as myself.

I have to go back for a HSG scan in October before my gyno would give me clomid, and by that time i will be TTC for prob around 18months!! Its a joke!!
She said she wouldnt give me clomid as there isnt a point in taking it if tubes are blocked and there guidelines there are to have ultrasound and hsg before giving clomid out.. understand tho as u wanna make sure its all ok there before taking clomid so its kind of a waiting game at mo for me!!

They also lost my results so OH has to repeat SA analysis and me some blood tests too!!
x
