I have grey hairs (wahh!). I really want to do something about them now, because I doubt I'll have time after LO gets here. And since my hair goes lovely and glossy at the end of preg and stays looking that way most of the the 4th trimester, it would be a shame if the effect was spoilt by loads of greys.

I'm quite cautious about products tho.... I normally use henna, which you would think would be OK as it's natural.... but I know manufacturers sometimes add ingredients which might make it not suitable for me to use. I was thinking of getting some henna from Lush, fairly sure that would be OK.

What do you think? Would that be safe? What other hair colour products are safe to use while pg?

I've been dying my hair all the way through... I have used bleach and stargazer colours (which are bright pink/blue so are only semi-permanent) with no problems.

Spoke to my hairdresser this week who said it's not a case of anything being unsafe, it's more that your hormones can change the way your hair takes the dye and can end up taking a shorter/longer time than usual. As long as you keep checking it for progress you shouldn't have a problem.

Henna is definitely best if you do want to keep it as natural as possible. x

I think henna should be ok, I used to use another commercial product and on the box it had a warning not to use if Henna product had been used in the past as could cause serious allergic reaction... So just be careful if you look for another product to make sure your head doesn't turn into a plum :P

I think henna should be fine...

I dyed my hair with henna when pregnant - its what was recommended as its completely natural so go for it :)
xx

I asked the nurse at my doctors office and she said it would be fine. I use pure Jamila henna. I like my hair black so I apply the henna first (turns it reddish/orange) and then I have to apply Indigo to get it black. Most of the products in the stores called "black Henna" etc... may contain chemicals. Just make sure you are using the right type of Henna.

I don't really know much about henna, and how henna applied to the hair might be different than applied to the rest of the body. However, when contemplating attending a recent "henna party", I did a little investigating and found several sources which have similar comments to the following:

"If you are interested in this temporary alternative, be aware that there are different types of henna. Natural, safe henna stains the skin orange, red, brown, cinnamon, brick, chocolate, or coffee and can last one to four weeks. Natural, safe henna does not come in a black color. You want to be absolutely sure the artist is using pure, natural products and NOT black henna. Black henna is not safe for anyone, pregnant or not. Black henna contains para-phenylendiamine (PPD), which causes burns, blisters and various reactions that may last for months and is difficult to diagnose and treat. Use of natural henna can be fun and is not permanent." from https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/tatoos.htm

I never use black henna. Lush do a very dark one, called Caca Noir, but it's not "black". I usually have the Caca Brun or the Caca Marron anyway. I want the Marron one this time, it turns my greys a lovely copper colour - cheap highlights!! :haha:
