Hand foot and mouth

My LO has hand foot and mouth and I really need some help!

He's refusing to put anything in his mouth other than warm milk..And he's lactose intollerant and only allowed a maximum of 2 bottle of milk a day as it causes him to be really badly ill if he has more (huge bloated belly, pain, tummy ache, eczema breakout to the point of bleeding) and is going to cause him just much more pain in the long run as his mouth is and isn't really helping anything.

He's in loads of pain with his mouth and I don't know if there's anything I can use other than Calpol that he's refusing to let me give him anyway but even when I do..It's not helping..And he keeps holding his hand to his mouth and screaming at it.

I'm trying to get as much fluids in him as I can but he's not making it easy, he had a wet nappy this morning and apart from tiny dribbles not one all day, and he's had more dirty nappies than normal (3 whereas usually he'd have 1 a day and sometimes not for a couple of days) I called the doctor who were of no real help and I just don't know what to do to help him  Neither of us are sleeping either which is making things so much harder!

No advice Im afraid hun but you're not alone. Aidan has it too, we hardly slept last night. He looks in a right state, horrible spots and massive eczema flare up he looks like a scaly dinosaur and its so sore.
Just keep trying with the fluid, what about a straw?

Aww bless him! It's awful I hope he gets better soon. I've tried a straw he just won't open his mouth. Not even to talk most of the time. He's gone back to being totally silent most of the time unless he's crying or screaming and just pointing at things. Everyones noticed how he's just suddenly refusing to talk, obviously because it's painful :/ He will usually come up and try to drink anything I am out of my glass so I though ohh I'll pretend to drink out of a glass and he'll come wanting to some but nope not even that worked :/ x

My son suffered this about 6 months ago.

I used calpol and bonjella.

He ate runny stuff only for about 4 days as he didn't want anything he had to chew ...yoghurts, custard pots, fruit purée pots and his milk. We are lucky though as I could just give him plenty of milk to make up for the lack of food.

Big hugs, my LO had this about a year ago and it was awful.

He suffered mostly in his mouth as well and we nearly ended up being admitted to hospital as he wouldnt take fluids.

My friend gave me a good tip - give him something which he never normally would be allowed so he tries it. Even if its a few sips here and there.

We had success with Ribena cartons. He sipped through the straws every half hour or so but over the course of the day we managed to get nearly 2 into him, doctor was happy with that.

Maybe give that a go? Otherwise try icepops? Its hard and feels brutal but get the calpol/nuerofen into him, even if you have to force it, it will help.

It passed for us in about a week so fingerd crossed it does for you

xxxxx

Owh I hope he starts to feel better soon :( It's horrible when they're poorly. I second the Ice Pops..

Thank you he was diagnosed Friday but he started showing a few symptoms last Wednesday making it a week but it doesn't seem to be getting any better, and now my older son has got the spots on his tongue and so have I..After being told I'm not at risk of catching it from them

I've forced Calpol down him and sat cuddling him crying myself feeling so awful for doing it, it has to be done though and usually he loves having medicine because who doesn't love the taste of Calpol (me included). It's actually a good idea trying him with a juice, he's always been on water..Maybe that might help? I actually bought some Strawberry Ribena yesterday as I saw it and thought oh my I haven't had that in years so I'll try him with that tomorrow if it works get some more. I really don't want him to have to be admitted to hospital I really hate them so I will do anything to not resort to them lol x

I hope you and your other LO don't catch it. When Riley's teething and won't keep anything down I give him some very warm water, with brown sugar in it. He loves it.. but because I only give it him on occasion, when hes poorly.. He wolfs it down. Today he wouldn't drink any milk.. but I managed to get 3oz of water down him twice, which helped me feel loads better about his fluid intake.

Personally Riley prefers warm drinks, to cold when his mouth hurts. Strange child. x

Our doc told us it wasn't contagious! I don't know whether I believe her! Aidans spots look at tiny bit better today. Hope the strawberry juice worked!

My LO had it when she was younger, she was so bad with it we had to force feed her liquid- we syringed water and/or diraylite (or however u spell it) in her mouth every half hr- she was getting so dehydrated so it had to be done but it was heartbreaking. We also got some jellies etc to try and feed her x

my sons just got over this in the past few days he just went really quiet and lay still all day and then would burst out crying pointing at his mouth, we gave him a lot of plain yogurts and just bread to try and nibble on.
