I only have the Maya Tie style at home atm (the other carriers are kept in hubby's car and at the grandparents house).

the hood isn't really big enough for Emma anymore- needs to be taller. This was the first carrier I made myself and I also found that the straps weren't as long as I'd like them to be.
Here is a pic of a reinforced corner (on a commercial carrier since the maya tie has a hidden layer with all the reinforcing). Just a box with an x in the middle

The only other tip I can think of is to sew it with upholstery thread- it's good and strong so I like to use it for carriers
