my 2nd isnt due for a while but just wanted to ask now :)

when my little girl was a newborn we made feeds as needed like boiling the water, letting it cool, then pouring the water into the bottle then when it was cool enough add the formula.

but we found this took too long and my daughter screamed the place down cos she had to wait.
so a friend suggested i do it this way.

boil the kettle first thing in the morning,
pour the desired amount of water into the bottles,
either just put the bottles filled with water on the side, or the fridge ready for the day,
then when needed heat the water up in the microwave, shake well to get rid of the heat spots, then when the water was the right temp add the formula powder.

i did this with my little girl when she was 6 months and she was fine but im not sure if its right to do this with a newborn?

You're supposed to add the powder to water 70deg or higher which is too hot for drinking, so you'd be boiling, cooling, then heating in micro and cooling again - surely takes more time than just making fresh??

I have a jug of cold boiled water in the fridge and when it's time for a bottle say 8oz) I boil the kettle, add 3 oz boiling water & mix with the 8 scoops. Then I add another 5oz of water from the jug in the fridge and shake and it's ready to go straight away!!!!

I know the guidelines state make up fresh every time and cool it down...but whos baby will wait for that. I have a friend who is a neonatal nurse and i now make up formula like she does (and how they do on the ward)..she has twins now and has had no problems with them.

Sterilise bottles......fresh water in.kettle....boil....i let it cool slightly then add the desired amount into the bottles....place lids tightly on...leave at room temp....when needed add powder.....shake vigorously and serve. Some time i will warm slightly for her....sometimes last feed of night...bit of warm milk to.help her sleep:blush:

I am wary of microwaves...but have a friend who after adding formula to bottles pops in microwave as she is using the colicylky baby formula which doesnt dissolve as well.

I know they say that powder isnt sterile and should be added to.70 degree water....however there are loads of.bacteria that potentially wouldnt be killed with 70 degrees!!!!! You would need to.add to.boiling hot water to.kill everything...i fact most things

Oh i also wont keep bottles made.up for long than.12 hours ish.....my.friend does 24 hours worth

Thank you both for your replies :) interested in the different safe ways to make up a bottle fast lol x

We use comfort milk and have found that sometimes the formula doesn't dissolve well.. Fairy Kate.. think I will try your suggestion as it sounds like you dissolve the formula in the hot hot water then add the cool to make it up to the correct measurement..
At the moment if we want 5oz bottles we fill the bottles up with 3oz of cool boiled water and then top up with 2oz and shake.. But sometimes this doesn't dissolve the comfort formula very well and we end up with blocked teats!

I'm planning on doing it how you said or how fairykate said, i've looked into several ways - you could always pre make all your bottles, rapid cool them, place them into the fridge then microwave when its needed to take off the chill?

This is what I was thinking to microwave the chilled boiled water from the fridge to make them warmish again. But would regular powder dissolve and would doing it this way upset a newborns tummy?
I just know that with Holly I just bought the ready made milk cartons to save time, and allow me to give it to her quick. Don't relly want to be doing that again it was way too expensive lol

1 of my friends boils the kettle, adds the water to the bottles, rapid cools them then places in the fridge - she then heats the bottles in the microwave, then adds the formula last - her son has had no problems.
I also have another friend who adds the formula before rapid cooling them, then places into the fridge & microwaves when her lo is wanting the bottle.
Both work fine for them.
I think its personal preference.
I heard that if you pre make them, store then microwave that the heat can kill the good nutrients? Unsure if thats true or not though.
Our parents always microwaved & we survived :)

I boil the kettle in the morning and place into small bottles. At the moment my LO is on 6oz bottles so i put 3 oz into each little bottle for them to go in the fridge to cool. When it is time for a feed i boil the kettle and add 3 oz of boiling water to a bottle then add the number of scoops of formula and shake well. I then get one of my little cooled bottles from the fridge and pour into the hote bottle, give it a good shake and is ready for drinking. I use my bottles i had for my LO when she was younger to store my cooled boiled water in, then i have the exact amount ready justto pour straight in. Works reslly well for me and have had no problems at all.

I FF from day 1 and always made up the bottles with cooled boiled water that I had poured into the bottles and just left on the side. I just added the powder as I went along. This is how I was told to make up bottles by the staff in the hospital. My baby was absolutely fine with this. So many people mention adding formula to water at least 70 degrees on here but I was never told to make my bottles up like this. Every body I know makes their bottles up with room temp water.

Anyway, Like Sarah27 I now use comfort milk so now I make the bottles up with just boiled water. I then add the powder, rapid cool and store in the back of the fridge for up to 24 hours. This is how people were advised to make up bottles when I had my daughter. At the end of the day the advice changes all the time and as far as I can tell the advice seems to be different for different areas so just do whatever is easier for you hun.

I've done them a couple of ways but my HV told me not to be making up full feeds and storing. I asked her about the 70degree thing and she told me the bacteria in the formula thrives when it has been mixed with water and left for more than 2 hours. I'm not sure how true this is but I realised it was easier to just put boiled water into bottles instead.

I boil kettle and fill up a thermo flask, then I put 2oz boiled water in bottles, rapid cool and put at back of fridge. When LO wants a feed I top up bottle with 2nd from flask shake and it's ready!

Xxx

Seriously?
We do things SO differently over here.
We use bottled mineral water, no boiling water.
Pour it in the bottles at room temperature, pour in the powder and heat up in microwave or bottle warmer. Easy peasy.

There are so many 'right' and 'wrong' ways of doing it so it really does depend on what works best for you. The back of the formula tin will tell you the 'right' way but as you say it is just not practical to make fresh feeds each time. I sterilise, boil kettle and allow to cool slightly, add water to bottles, put lids on and leave on the side at room temp, then when my LO gets hungry I add the powder and give a good shake! My sister did it this way with her LO and never had any problems so I adopted it on her advice which has works for us fine :)

I should add that my LO has her bottles at room temp, never enjoyed them warm, so I don't need to heat them. However when I did warm her feeds at first I would just put the bottle in a jug of warm water for a couple of mins rather than microwaving.

with the 70degree thing, does anyone use a thermometer?

How can you tell it's not too hot or too cool? My formula I will use has cultures in so I can only add it to 50celcius water incase I kill off the cultures. I was thinking of buying a thermometer (a glass one) so that I can sterilise it and use it for each feed.

I plan to boil the kettle (using baby water as otherwise I have to filter everytime over here), then pour into sterile bottles and rapid cool and store in fridge. Then I was going to warm the water with the teat off in the bottle warmer untill it's 50celcius and add the formula stirring untill dissolved. After that I would let it cool untill it's OK for baby to drink.

for when I'm out I was going to fill my thermo flask with freshly boiled water and then pour it into a sterile bottle and check temperature with the thermometer and add the formula and shake, then let it cool until it's srinking temperature.

When we first started FF Sophie we were making a fresh feed every time until my mum came round and could believe we were doing it, we soon changed to the method she used with me which is make up a days worth of feeds in advance and store in the fridge until needed, we never used them over 12hrs and kept them at the back of the fridge,
A friend of mine used to pour out the boiled water then add the powder when needed, I suppose this way nothing gets wasted but I didn't like the formula hadn't been sterilised before being kept very cool, I havnt thought about how we will do it this time but neither Sophie or my friends baby ever had any problems so il probably use one of those methods x

I add boiled water to the bottle give it 5 mins in a cold jug of water then add formula then leave to cool in the cold water again till ready.
I also leave the kettle for 30 mins then make the bottles so they are ready in time for baby.
I do also pre make bottles for during the night and keep them refriderated and heat them up in a jug of boiled water, I've been doing this since my first baby 18 years ago.

My HV and a midwife said the same as mitchnorm:
Add boiled water to sterilised bottles, leave at room temp and add powder when needed.

Just started trying a new way - I used to make them up fresh but after reading advice on this forum I now make 5 bottles at a time and pour 90ml - 3oz of boilging water into each bottle and fridge it, Then when needed I add 3oz fresh boiled water - this is then hot enough to dissolve formula and then at perfect temp to feed LO and I don;t have to keep clock watching and trying to guess when he;ll feed next
