My degree is in Genetics. We did a common first year covering a range of Biology subjects (things like Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Botany, Physiology etc) then after the first year you could specialise a bit more so people's degrees tended to be called things like Microbiology, Zoology etc but you could include other modules outside of your specialty, so my degree was mostly Genetics and Microbiology modules with a little Neurobiology and Endocrinology thrown in for fun!
I work for the NHS as a scientist. I have mostly worked on the genetics of bacteria and viruses through my career, though I did a little human genetics research when I worked at Great Ormond Street years ago. Nowadays I mostly work on HIV and Hepatitis B and C viruses, but some other viruses too from time to time.
