After having Reagan delivered by emergency c-section on christmas day 2005 after the sudden and severe onset of pre-eclamptic toxemia, my consultant is fast becoming my best friend this pregnancy.

I am having a specialist uterine doppler scan on 14th July, which I know determines the blood flow through the placenta and the pressure on the cord.

I don't know what to expect though  I feel like I am counting down the days to find out if I am once again a ticking time bomb.

What happens at a scan like this? Will they tell me there and then the chances of getting pre-eclampsia again? Are they able to give a rough estimation of how long the pregnancy can continue if the results aren't so great?

I had this scan, when I was admited to ERI and it showed that the blood flow to baby was not good. It was just like a 'normal' scan but instead of looking at your baby they concentrate on the cord and it shows up in blue and orange, and from this they can tell how the blood flow and oxygen is. I can't tell you any more than that because by this point I was soo tired from waiting around all day then traveling to edinburgh and v emotinal.

I *think* they can give you aspirin to help with the blood flow??

I hope they can give you some good news (((hugs)))

I remember having this scan now about an hour before they delivered Reagan, but I was so confused and in a daze that I didn't take any of it in!!

I have been on baby aspirin since 12 weeks, also combined with calcium...I just feel like I am waiting to find out my fate, with Reagan I never knew anything in advance until I went into hospital on christmas eve with nothing more than instinct something wasn't right, less than 24 hours after that she was delivered, it was all so quick...

If the doppler scan shows reduced blood flow at 24 weeks then, what happens? Will they keep her cooking for as long as possible and check me more regularly until delivery...eeekkkssss....I am so scared of the unknown!!

this is exactly whats happened to me,.,,, if its showing reduced blood flow even after taking asprin like i am then they will talk to you about getting baby out at a safe weight etc if thts the best outcome.. but i blive u will get a few scans as i have done x hth x

I had one too as had severe PET with my son and it measures the blood flow between baby and placenta. I was fine this pregnancy and fingers crossed you will be too hun

I had to have a few Dopplar scans with Evie as she was IUGR, I was going to be induced early because the doppler readings were getting increasingly high but she decided to come before the induction 6 weeks early. As others have said its just like a normal ultrasound scan but on th cord and placenta. xx

Thanks everyone for your replies :hugs: it has put my mind at rest a bit.

I know what will be, will be, and if I do find myself in the same situation then I know I got through it once before, so I will do it again...I just may put in a request for my tubes to be well and truly tied at the same time as a c-section if I require another one for the same reasons!!

That gives me hope, this may be too much of a personal question, but do both children have the same father?

My little girl has a different dad to this baby, therefore I believe my chances of PET again are higher than if it was the same?

Yes they do have both have the same dad but as there was nearly seven years difference between them the consultant said that the risk was the same as first time. Fingers crossed for you
