Has anyone here had a water birth and actually delivered in the water!?

I really want to have a water birth but dont know anyone that has had it .. or not really much about it ..

how soon do i tell the hospital i want a water birth.. and what sort of things could stop me having it..?!

what was it like ... does it really help with pain .. and will the hospital guarantee that i can have one !? .. or is it sort of if there is space you can ..

also im worried the midwife may try and put me of if its too much hassle for them !? ... i dont nooo ..

just like to no abit more from some that has experianced it at all !! ..

I would recommend telling the hospital/your midwife/gp as soon as possible, just to plan and I guess it can't hurt telling them now. Things that could stop you having it would be if you were to be induced, or if you had an infection.

I found it really relaxing. I'm the sort that loves having a nice soak in the bath, and I just thought it was really comfortable. I can't say whether it helped with the pain per se, as I was in there from when I got to the hospital at 7cm to when I gave birth. But I didn't find that my pains were too bad over all - but then again my waters had to be broken around transition stage so that would have helped cushion the pain.

People say that water helps reduce tearing - that one I'm not sure about but I can see how in theory that would be true. I had a 2nd deg labial tear, a 2nd degree vaginal tear and some 1st deg vaginal internal tears. Pretty standard really I think, but I guess I don't have much to compare it with!

I would say that whether you could have a water birth or not (if conditions were suitable) would be as you have listed - if birthing pool was not an option or unavailable at that time. At the hospital I birthed at, there were about seven rooms with birthing pools (they looked a bit like jacuzzis) so I was lucky that there was that option!

I wouldn't say it's any more hassle for them than a birth on dry land. It's your right to have a water birth - if it's what you really want, stick to your guns. I think you'll love it  I would have one again next time for definite!

A few more bits and bobs...
One - I did poo while pushing (it is VERY common) and, erm, it does float past if the midwife isn't fast enough to scoop it - mine had a net   So it's harder to miss than it may be if you were on a bed.

More mess - when pushing and once baby comes out there will be mess in the water. I didn't find it to be overly gory though, and I quite liked the fact that when my son came out of the water he wasn't as gunky as he might have been had he not been born in the water

I think my son being born in water was a lovely experience for not just me but for him too, he was very calm when he came out and looked me right in the face :cloud9:

When birthing in the water, you cannot have an epidural or anything intravenous but (if available) you can have gas and air - I used this and found it really helpful to relax me between contractions. It doesn't take the pain away really but takes your mind off things.

I think that's all from me (sorry for the ramble) - wishing you all the best!

:flower:

Thanx So Much .. this is exactly what i was hopeing for ..

I love a nice bath too .. and i think im aiming more that way as like you say .. maybe they come out abit cleaner.. (apart from being covered in poo LOL .. but its good ur midwife had a net and was obviously prepared for everything).. id feel slightly cleaner too ..
i also looove the fact that u can keep them in there for a little while .. and just watch before they take there first breath ! ..

So glad I could help :flower: My OH was funny about him coming out in the water, he was all "But won't he drown?"

I think it makes you less sweaty (well at least not sweaty in the gross parts) and you don't end up with bloody/gunky inner thighs after the birth so hey that's a good thing, no murder scene look I guess haha.

It was nice, when he came out I dipped a hand towel in the water and covered him with it to keep him warm. Water birth is so handy for skin to skin right away

Keep us posted to let us know what your midwife says, I'm sure all will be just fine :) x

yeah ... my OH didnt like the idea at first ..

hes not too good with blood .. and he thought that because id be in water it would ALL turn red .. looking like more blood and make him worse .. but iv talked him round ...:happydance:

but yeah i will keep you updated .. fingeres crossed the midwife is really into them or something !! LOL ..

xx

I had a water birth. It was at home so I can't answer most of your questions, but pain-wise it did help lots. It helps you assume different positions too as it supports your weight. I wasn't intending a water birth, I was going to labour in the pool and then get out to actually birth him, but when the time came I wasn't moving anywhere!

Blood turning the water pink was something I worried about since DH is squeemish, but he managed (especially as the rom was dark).

I think the pool contributed to how calm my son was. The room was dimly lit, too, so he came from a dark, body-temperature, watery environment into exactly the same. He didn't even cry, and his APGARS were 9 and 10.

I had a hospital water birth with my son and LOVED it! He was overdue and i was induced. I got into the pool at 7cm and found the contractions much easier to deal with. He was a big baby (10lb) and I found that having the freedom to move around into different positions much easier in water than on dry land as the water helped to support the weight. I delivered him in the water, the lights were dimmed, minimal monitoring (the occasional fetal heart check after a contraction) and the midwife remained very "hands off" allowing me to deliver in my own time. I had some tears but that was more to do with his giant 38cm head ... I contorted myself into all kinds of positions to help deliver him! I'm convinced that having a water birth saved me from having an instrumental delivery. We're TTC again, this time I'll be going for a water birth at home.

Awww thank ladies .. lovely stories ..

i do agree i think it must help in some way that baby comes from one place to another in similar surroundings...

and im hopeing it helps with the pain too ...
