Feeling a bit down today. My baby is 4.5 months old. Last weekend I left her for 2 nights (the first time I have left her overnight).

Since I got back, it's like she doesnt even recognise me. No smiles, not wanting to interact with me, turning away from me. Then when daddy walks in it's all laughs and smiles.

I've never felt so utterly rejected in all my life! Has this happened to anyone? Is this normal?

I'm sure she hasn't forgotten you. But babies do pick up on our feelings. It sounds like maybe you're feeling anxious and upset about it and she's also going to pick up on that worry. If you're sad or stressed, she'll behave funny too because they're so sensitive to us. It could also be totally unrelated, that she's going through a growth spurt, getting a cold, starting to teethe, etc. and just not feeling herself right now. Just have lots of cuddles and time together and try not let it worry you. She most certainly hasn't forgotten you.

I definitely don't think she's forgotten you, like MindUtopia said it could be something else such as teething or picking up on your feelings. Also it may be that she is used to you being around and therefore feels secure and doesn't need to look for you all the time. I always joked with OH that he was 'a novelty' because he wasn't there with them 24/7 like I was (he works 6am-6pm, 4 days on, 4 days off) so when my oldest was younger he was excited when he got home and found him more interesting. I never got the same reaction because my son was used to me being there and only tended to come to me if he needed reassurance or guidance. I hope that makes sense!

(I should add my DH is definitely not a novelty, when he's home he is a very hands on and loving father!!)

Oh, she remembers you, she's just cross because she noticed you had gone and she does not know why. My eldest used to lank me when she was a baby, if I had so much as gone out for a few hours. Don't worry, it's just her way of showing she missed you but is now a bit cross that you went because she loves you.

Thankyou all! I'm happy to report that after waking up from her afternoon nap she was pretty much back to her normal self. The best smiles and giggles are still saved for daddy though!
