Sometimes they get progressively darker to being positive and others have almost no second line at all one day and then bam positive the next day. I am just guessing but I don't think you missed your surge, I think your first test at noon might have just had more dye in it. But just as likely if you hadn't tested yesterday it could have happened then, I guess it depends on what cycle day you are on and what your normal cycle length is.
