Hello my lovelies,

I've been taking a wee break from TTCng for the past 3 months but am now back, woop woop! Not so 'woop woop' though as we've been trying for over a year now *sigh*.

Anyways, I've been referred to have a HSG, eeps! Hubby's sp results are, in the words of our GP and gyno, 'excellent' and 'brilliant' (humph, rub it in, obviously allllllll me!) and I ovulate fine and have good hormone levels. So, now they wanna see if my tubes are blocked.

Anyone else wanna share their experiences of a HSG? What's next if the HSG is all clear? And what if it isn't? Do they book you in for an op to unblock those tubes?

God, I really want a baby now. I keep dreaming about them. Equally, I really want so hard to stave off the obsession that took over my life last year. It's so tough. xx

Hey Trix! long time no ear! And now you have that lovely exotic wedding come up! :wohoo:

Had my HSG done just before crimbo with a transvaginal ultrasound - is that what you are having done?

First off it is okay, doesn't take as long as it appears! I had my ultrasound done first - that was a long 'wand' thing that they put a sheath on and then put it inside you - they can see the layout and check all is okay and they can even see your follies! the girl who did mine guessed my CD perfectly.

After that i put a gown on and waited for my turn - i had a consult with the doctor first and she talked through medical history/ttc history etc. I had done a pregnancy test when i first arrived as they have to make sure you aren't pregnant - i then had to sign a disclaimer to say i wasn't pregnant.

Then i jumped on the bed with the xray machine above me, gown pulled up to under my boobs and legs akimbo (sounds nice huh!). They use the speculum like with the smear and that is fine, then they insert a narrow and tiny tube through your cervix, it's like a sharp pinch but isn't too bad - PROMISE. After the tube is in they put the sticky thick dye stuff in and push it through the tubes whilst taking scans off your tummy - if you have your belly button pierced you have to take it out.

It takes about 5-10 mins for the HSG itself to be done and the more you relax the quicker it is - bit of deep yoga breathing helps heaps. It doesn't hurt, it's just a bit uncomfortable kinda like period pains and i felt 'congested' - then as soon as she took the speculum out i was fine.

After i got up and felt kinda gloopy! They gave me a sanitary pad and i went home, slight spotting and miled AF cramps which went within the hour - got home, had a hot bath and made myself feel more human then put my feet up for the afternoon. Don't go back to work after, just chill out xxx

Thanks hon. Doesn't sound too bad. I'm not having a vaginal ultrasound, just the HSG. Yeah, can't wait for the wedding (after all the fuss last year) and IF I get preggo now *Trixie laughs wrly* I will be fine to travel. And if I don't, what better place to try than Mauritius, yay!

Did they notice anything with your HSG? What were the next steps? Man, can't beleive we're both here, remember when we were both young hopefuls in the TC section. I'm avoiding that area this year - the 'Yay, I got a BFP after one month' and 'OMG, I got a cramp, am I preggo' posts are so damn soul-destroying, ha ha (says the girl who used to be the first to post with fake symptoms, tee hee!). x

Hi hun, can't answer your questions but just wanted to say hello and welcome back! xxxx

Thanks hon, good to see your name again. We'll get there one day, hey?!

Hi hun i had a hsg, it can make u more fertile i conceived that cycle, but unfortunatly m/c. Mine was all clear, the fs says if im not preg by May we start clomid. Rachelle discribed the procedure well, leave ur diginty at the door, it's not nice but not to bad. Take some paracetamol before. XXX

Hey there....yep the procedure is abit like a smear test at first but when the dye goes in or the catheter in your tube it feels like bad period pains...when its out its fine. YOu can ask the radiographer if its blocked ...mined showed it to me and said its not ...but I really couldnt figure out what i was looking at!

Can't tell you with what happens next as I have got my FU appointment through and its next week....I've been trying to find out but no-one on here apparently has had a FU appointment...its seems to me like that you miraculously appear on some kind of waiting list or are given clomid. Will let you know though when I go.

I am going to have one soon and was wondering the same thing. Thanks Rachelle for your description. The information on google sounds pretty intimidating, but it doesn't sound so bad the way you described it.

Gotta say the HSG was awesome - i got to see my fallopian tubes and everything! very interesting! (on the screen in black and white - not in gory technicolor!)

After my HSG she basically said i had a small fibroid under my womb which was nothing to worry about - she said that the majority of women have small fibroids and likened them to knots on a tree! She was able to tell me then and there that i had no blockages, no endo or PCOS and that my tubes branched of 'beautifully' as she put it!

What is next for us is that we see the consultant on 11th Feb - we already have male factor diagnosis so it's good that i am okay really. See the consultant who will tell us that it's definitely ICSI and the treatment plan is within 6 months - so hopefully by the end of August we will have started or finished our first cycle!

I guess depending on what your results are depends on the next step - some people with unexplained had to wait for 2 years before they could begin treatment but it could an IUI referral?

When did you say your HSG is?

If you get pregnant in mauritius please just don't call it that okay?

Hi there, i had hsg test done in september, the doctor said that both my tubes were blocked...i was devestated. When i went back to see my consultant she said she wanted to do it again as sometimes the tubes spasm apperaing blocked, si had a lap test done at same time. When i came round from anasthetic i was told that everything was perfect and no blockages. I am just waiting for some blood results now. I just wanted to let you know that if they do say tubes are blocked...they may not be so ask for second opinion. I am sure you will be fine though...i was probably an exception!!!

good luck let me know how you get on and lets get those :bfp:in 2009 xxx

Thanks girlies. Ha ha, I won't call my kid Mauritius if we conceive there but what about Mauri, that's quite cute? Tee hee.

The HSG appointment isn't set yet. Just had a form come thru, asking me to give deets of my period etc so they can fix an appointment at the right time. They said 4 months on the letter, but my gyno said 6 weeks, WTF? x

she is right a lot of HSG tests can be fake so to speak ...so no worries if they said it's blocked they usually double check ...

Hi

Had mine done monday, it was nothing. They waarn you that putting the clip on the cervix can be uncomfortable, but i didnt feel that bit at all, and as others explained injecting hte dye can be uncomfortable. I was worried after reading mixed opinion all over the internet, seems either some people really do have a bad time or they are just puffs :) I would say i am usually a right wimp but i didnt have a problem with hte discomfort. And thats all i would call it, discomfort! As people have said its like a strong period cramp for no more than 10-20seconds. I really would not be worried at all. Like others have said the nurses are really nice, well mine were, the assitant nurse offered to hold my hand as i did wince slightly when it felt a bit crampy which i thought was sweet. Like i say its over very quick and the discomfort is not like sharp pain its more an ache. Well it was for me anyway. I had no blockages and wether this is a myth or not they say its can be more uncomfortable if you have a blockage i presume because they are trying to push the dye threw?

Regardless the way i look at HSG is its preperation for having a baby right.........none of us on here are concerned about how much that will hurt but we are all panicy when it comes to having our HSG!!! Just remember you are trying your hardest everymonth to go threw labour in 9 months time which has got to be the most painful thing any woman can go threw right? Thats what i tried to tell myself as i was waiting for mine anyway llol hehe

Good luck hun you will be fine X

I have to be honest mine was quite painful.. a bit like a bad smear test. I do have quite a low pain threashold and I took some paracetamol before I went in but it was still not very pleasant....having said all that it was completely worth it!!! Definatley go for it!

The HSG is in most cases the first step to finding out if there are any problems, so it's DEFINITELY worth it like clara belle said.

And like twinkle said, during my HSG one of my tubes was blocked and I too determined that must be what was preventing us from getting pregnant. At my follow up appt the radiologist who studied the pictures told me my tube was going through spasms so that's why it had closed, but that everything looked fine and I didn't need to worry, on my side at least.
So don't automatically think the worst if one or both of your tubes are closed, it may be just the body's natural reaction to the cramping and getting a second opinion or an explanation may clear things up.

It honestly does feel like period cramping, and you will know the results almost instantly as you can see the screen and what's going on in there!

Hmm, I didn't know that spasms are something to watch for. I guess I always assume that tests are correct and wouldn't think to question it. Thanks for the warning. My test is next Friday and I'm getting anxious...

Honestly please dont be anxious, i know its hard not to be cos i was too, but put it this way, now i know what its like if i needed to have anotehr 10 over the next few days it really would not bother me! I know everyone is different but the majority of people experience no problems or significant discomfort as my radioligist put it. Would be good if you could come back on here and let us know how it went? Good luck hun and I hope everything is OK for you and your tubbies :) x

Thanks Chocci, I will definitely come back and let you know how it went.

yes i've had one when i had my laparoscopy

mine tubes were clear thank god xx
