Hoping I can glean some advice here, I'm having some concerns with feeding and pooping!

I've just stopped bf'ing Joel, because he would always puke up my milk. I was only nursing about twice a day anyways. So I have him on soy formula as I suspect a milk allergy could be possible, but he's getting constipated from that. Any tips on dealing with constipation in a 10 week old?

Also, I'm worried he's not eating enough. He's a big guy, over 13lbs now. I read about people's littler ones having 4-5oz feedings, but we're still averaging more like 3oz per feed, sometimes 4oz. Over the last 24hrs, he's had about 24oz. Is that enough?

And is there a way to encourage him to eat more at a feeding, rather than snacking? The guy goes off with all bells sounding, then will only eat half his bottle. I have to ignore him as he gets over halfway, because he starts grinning and stops eating. Like he just eats enough to stop the rumble, but not enough to fill him right up!

THanks for any advice!

All babies are diff, I'm sure you've heard that a million times but really. My middle son Casen only took 1-4oz a feeding until 11mo! He couldn't handle anymore t a time. If your son is satisfied I would really go with what he wants, 24oz sounds fine and he's def growing fine :) Is it possible it's not a true dairy allergy? Maybe it's just lactose? My oldest was on lactose free formula for about 6mo then was able to go back to regular stuff and then started whole milk at 12mo with no problems, but at first it made him really constipated. I know the soy doesn't have lactose, but some people actually think soy isn't very good for babies, especially boys, but many will disagree. But I think if you could doing something dairy based so making the transition later might be easier, if the soy isn't working I would give lactose free a try and see if it helps any.

i used to have to give ds his bottle in 2 stages hun as he would get full of wind and stop feeding. Once burped, changed and woken up again he would finish the bottle. charlie is v similar too - although he is proving harder to wake up! :dohh: what stage teets are you using? maybe he is having to work too hard to get the milk out - i change the teets to level 2 pretty much straight away so it is easier for them to get it. hope this helps. xx
sorry if i am telling you stuff you already know chick. xxx

archie is on wysoy from the doctor, with lactose intolerance and it makes him a tad constipated too...gp advised me to offer him 2 bottles of water a day with a small amount of sugar in until the constipation eased then give him 1 a day to keep him going
it worked but archie does still get constipated from time to time(hes 12 weeks now)
as for the small amounts hun i wouldnt worry archie still cant take more than 4 or 5 without grinning at me..i think some babies just dont like to feel stuffed after a feed...as long as hes gaining weight at a good rate hell be fine

Thanks for the advice! I'll just not worry then about his smallish feedings. I guess I just figured that because he's such a big guy (born at 10lbs 9oz) he should eat at least as much or more than other babies! I'll just watch his weight gain

I'm not sure about if it's a true dairly allergy or not. I'll def try a can of lactose free. I read a bit about the soy controversy, and I know I'd much rather feed him dairy if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've been using glass bottles, and they only come with one size nipple, which is supposed to adjust to how much baby is sucking. Maybe I'll give another a different bottle with a stage 2 on it and see how he does. I know I've got some in a drawer somewhere! Mind you, the guy is a soother addict, so I think he's got some sucking determination!

Thanks for the tip on the water! Will give that a go if he's still clogged up tomorrow.

Good luck, I hope the lactose free works! My son couldn't have dairy for awhile, my youngest, he was breastfed so I just avoided it, but at 14mo we wanted to introduce something more than water and we chose rice milk which is a great alternative too. Not at your son's age now but if it came down to that once he was a year old. Some people use goat's milk instead of formula too to avoid soy. Just some other options you could look into if you wanted to keep him off soy but hopefully the lactose free works just fine :)

I agree jacob is lactose intorlant and he is on lf milk, Soy made him really windy. But sugest you go to a doc and get him proper diagnoised before you try LF milk. As he might not be Lactose or diary intorlant therefor shouldnt be on the milk. As it really limits stuff when you get to weaning etc and if he is not then it will save alot of trouble XxX
