My DS is 8 months old and he still won't pick up food, I have tried to give him finger foods such as carrot sticks (soft) cucumber strips, bits of fruit like banana's, pear & even a bit of kiwi fruit however he just won't pick them up and put them in his mouth himself

We even have to put his water cup to his mouth before he will drink from it.
He will pick the food up but he just looks at it & bashes it into his tray lol

Is there anything i can do to encourage him to pick up and put his food in his mouth? as well as his cup?

Do you eat alongside him, with the same food hes having. Babies love to copy their parents.

If this was my LO, because he's under a year old and milk is still where he needs to be getting most of his nutrients from, I'd just have him sat with us at the table so he could watch what we were doing and leave him to it. If he wants to play with it that's fine, let him explore it and don't fret about how much he's eating as right now it isn't important. Eventually he'll copy you but aslong as he expects you to put everything in his mouth for him he won't think to do it himself.

Alex didnt put the food in his mouth and actually eat till he was 19 months old. He ended up on my lap eating off my plate, Hes 3 now. Loves good food. Is asking me for a chicken curry for dinner, love potatoes, baked potatoes, sausages and adores fish. Will eat veg and fruit not a bother. He blw himself. Still gets breastmilk. I just followed his lead. *and totally worried along the way like any parent*

Thats alright then, a health visitor at the weigh in club I take him to was asking me about his weaning etc and i said that he likes to play with any food that i give him but doesn't really put it in his mouth & she said that he should be doing that by now :S which of course made me think
He does show interest in the spoon and grabs it and pulls it towards himself but then likes smearing the food all over his hands lol.
Unfortunately he doesn't sit with us at tea time as by the time me & OH actually sit down and eat its nearly half 7 and he's winding down for bedtime. But he does sit with me for breakfast and lunch so i'll just give him his food and let him explore :)
Thankyou ladies :flower:

I know people who haven't even started weaning at 8 months! It was unfair of your HV to make you worry about it.
