Hello and SA Question?

Hello everyone, I have just moved over from TTC as this month is my 14th cycle. We have not been diagnosed with infertility just yet as we have not had the tests done. I had high prolactin but that is under control now and my CD21 test was fine. DH did a home sperm test and it was positive. He has been working his way up to doing the actual SA as doctors do not want to test me further until he does so. So this week I will be phoning his doctor to get the ball rolling. The question I have is for the sake off him. He is so worried about having to go to the hospital to give his sample and he is not sure what to expect. He thinks he will not be able to provide the sample. Could someone please tell me what to expect or what their other halves experiences were. You can pm me if you do not want to say openly and I appreciate everyone for their advice.

Is there no way he can do it at home, then take it within an hour?

I have asked this and my doctor says no. I'll see what his doctor says but the drive to the hospital is an hour away anyway.

My OH has had to give a few SA, but it never really bothered him TBH. I can understand how he must feel but its nothing to worry about.

Hey hun we were told to get the sample in under an hour to the hospital so DH was able to do it at home but for IVF he will have to do it at the clinic while the taxi waits outside!!

If they can't let him do it at home due to time constraints maybe it'll be easier to do it without u there? Less pressure?xx

I will have to take him to the hospital to do it though.
I can say to him about waiting in the car...as I know when he did the home test he did it while I was at work.
He is just worried about not giving the sample because were he is will put him off.
Then on a funnier note he is asking if they give you 70's porn mags to help you along, lol.
At least he is still willing to go and get it done. It has just taken months of persuasion (sp).
I will get him to ask his doctor if it would be possible to do it at home and take it to the hospital.
There is a hospital 20 mins away but we have to take it to a hospital in Belfast which is 50 mins away and that is not including traffice delays and the hugh queue to get into the car park.

Hi, we are in the same situation. Appointment with fs on 5/2 and OH needs to provide sample before. Although he is totally supportive of our journey to have a baby, he is a bit anxious to provide his goodies for testing. We've managed to keep bding fun and exciting despite the pressure of ttc, so suddenly having to perform just for the sake of getting his swimmers out is taking ttc to another dimension.

Anyway, I phoned the clinic and they said that they will send forms and that means he doesn't need to go to his GP. The hospital have confirmed that it can be done at home providing we can get the sample to them within an hour. Thankfully, we live only a few minutes away. All we have to do is book an appointment for the delivery, either on a Wed or Fri morning. They analyse the test immediately and provide the report directly to the consultant, so that's easy.

OH prefers me to help him and I'll be the one dropping the specimen as just the thought of walking and handing it to a nurse makes him nervous. Bless him!

Hi Irish Eyes,

My DH has had a SA in most of the hospitals in NI lol

He did get himself pretty worked up about the whole thing as well but has never had a problem providing his sample. Feel free to PM me about which hospital your DH is going to and I'll tell you how it works there. I'm an expert lol

Hi All,
This is sooooo much TMI my DH will kill me and I am sorry to share but if it will help anyone here goes.

We had an SA done in Nov. We live too far also from clinic but DH did NOT want to 'go' in clinic. We did not tell them how far we lived and just said we would do home sample. We took home a container and then found -shall we say-a nice "nature" spot about five minutes from the clinic and had 'fun' there. (this is embarrassing:-I wore a little mini skirt I would normally never wear sans panties-and that was enough!) I think the fun fantasy of it and slight naughtiness took so much away from the clinical aspect of it.
It is such a private personal matter (except on message boards :ROFL:!) and can be so embarrassing that I guess whatever feels MOST comfortable in an UNcomfortable situation for you both would work.
