I cant believe im finally writing this, when i thought i would be pregnant forever lol. I was convinced i would go overdue, but i was surprised by my wonderul son Harry John Tomlinson turning up 21/01/2012 (day before due date) at 11:31pm, 22 hours after my first contraction, weighing in at a lovely 8lb 11oz, 55cm
I woke up at 1.30am saturday morning with some uncomfort that came and went...i timed them after a while and for a few hours they were getting stronger and longer, coming about every 5 minutes. then they died down to around 10-15, and i was getting disappointed. as i was so tired from being awake so early, and having very little sleep over the previous 2 nights, i lie down on the sofa, and at one point there was a gap of almost an hour.
when i woke, i pottered around and noticed that they were getting closer together, lasting at least 60-90 seconds, but still irregular - every 3-8 minutes! By now (about 3pm) the pain was starting to get really really intense to the point where i was almost screaming through through them. I'd coped with them up until that point, through singing through them and rolling hips 'dancing' alongside my daughter.
On the way to the hospital i started to shake and started feeling sick, figured i was heading towards the transition stage so i got a carrier bag 'just in case' - i think i was more anxious and afraid of being sick than of being in labour (which, by the way, travelling in a car with a contraction is NOT fun!)
Got to labour ward at just gone 3.30pm....boiling hot at this point waiting in triage, in agony and in tears from the pain and the fear of being sick. Finally, after the longest 20 minutes of my life, a triage midwife came and got me and examined me and she said i was about 9cm, 8-9 cm to be safe, and that my waters were bulging. i was so happy to hear that i had made it to 9cm all on my own with nothing but some paracetamol 6 hours earlier! ok, so i had screamed like a banshee getting there, but still
Got taken to delivery room about 4.20pm, where i asked for an anti sickness drug. got on the bed and the midwife suggested i try pushing gently to try and relieve the pressure during contractions, and in the hope of getting waters to go. I tried gas and air, but didnt like the feeling of it. pushing didnt help, so i was begging for an epidural lol. The anaesthist lady came about 5 minutes later, and said she would give me one, but that it might not work if i was close to giving birth. i didnt care, i was screaming the ward down, ive NEVER had pain like that, not even with my other two.
epidural went in, and worked! oh my god, it was wonderful! contractions were bearable again until about 6.30, when i couldnt feel a thing. Brilliant
had a new midwife come in, and she examined me, and went and got the doctor as she wasnt happy with Harrys positioning - he was still high up, and to one side of my pelvis. The rest of the space was taken up with my waters, and she wasnt sure whether to break them in case the cord came down first.
The doctor came in about 7.45, she felt around, and decided to break my waters (she ended up having to change....i had a LOT in there lol) she then came back after getting dry and explained that now i had lost my waters, i had gone down to being only 7cm dilated which really disappointed me (but made me glad id asked for the epidural!!) apparently because the membranes were so big, it was they that was causing cervix to dialte, not Harrys head, so as soon as they went, the cervix closed to proper width it had got to. I wasnt to be examined for another 4 hours - midwife said 3 to get to fully dilated and apparently they like to give it an extra hour if you've had an epi to get the head right down.
however, as Harry kept moving away from the monitoring belt, they decided to attach a strip to his head about 10.30pm. She said i was fully dilated at that point, but obviously would need to wait just over an hour to be properly examined again. however, her colleague came in about 11 and said 'might as well start pushing!' so i did!
Although i could feel the pressure of him coming down during each contraction (although couldnt feel the contraction) i still felt it hard to push. About 10 minutes into pushing though, managed to do it the right way, and his head came down quick and came out too fast for midwife lol. his body was out in the next push
I had the syntocin injection to get the placenta out...that was out in 2 minutes.
I cant believe he's here!! im so in love with him, i love giving him cuddles
i've had an hours sleep since, as he was quite fidgety until the past hour - he had a lot of mucous in his tummy and lots of wind and meconium poop to come out so has been waking either to relieve either one lol.
towel pic is 10 minutes after birth, the one in his animal sleepsuit is taken at 4 hours old, and the one where he's snuggled in blanket is when i got home at lunchtime today
