Hi Ladies

I need some help, i did breastfed my son for the first 4 days and then due to a high demand he was moved onto formula, im currently using Cow & gate comfort. The problem is he keeps sounding like he is constipated when he is trying to sleep, and specially at night we are woken by him straining or thats what it sounds like. Ive tried a small amount of cool boiled water and it doesnt do anything. He has a soiled nappie about twice a day so i dont even know if he is constipated or struggling getting his wind up!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! x

unless the poo is like rock hard pellets, he isnt constipated. Can i ask why you put him straight onto a comfort milk instead of a normal one? All babies strain at first because they have to learn to push a poo out. Xxx

I had him on the aptimal stage 1 at first and moved him onto the comfort as my midwife told me it sounded like constipation, do you think it could be due to the change in the milk?

not sure, i wouldnt think so. My LO is on comfort and to start with he just had to fart and he would poo :haha: now he has got used to the milk and is on gaviscon and has had to learn to push. (gaviscon can make them more constipated). So i wouldnt think it would be constipation while on comfort milk. How long has he been on comfort? It takes a while to take effect x

well this morning im now strating to think its not constipation cause like i said he is doing a dirty nappie and its not hard at all. Hes been on the comfort for about 4 days. I have the midwife coming round today so im hoping she can suggest sumthin, im going to get a rocking stand for his moses basket and see if that helps for shifting any trapped wind!

Our LO strained for weeks when just born, think they have to learn to use their muscles for pooing and farting! He did get constipated but even when he did poo he'd still strain afterwards. He's grown out of it now but cries sometimes when he needs to fart poor wee man.

Our LO does this at night too.. apparantly it's normal and as already said it's to do with them not knowing when to strain as they think every sensation in their insides requires them to push!

We thought it was constipation too but it wasn't as the poos were always soft. We mentioned it to the MW and the HV and both said it was normal and they grow out of it... it makes for a noisy night mind you although you do learn to sleep through it.
