I don't know what to do. My OB suggested I wean my 2 year old so the newborn can get all my milk. However, my 2 year old only nurses at nap and at bed time (well, thats what we are working on ha). DH thinks I should wean her because he thinks my 2 year old will take all my milk and baby wont get enough.

I DID have supply issues last time around, however, I also waited too long to get my thyroid checked and I believe that attributed to the issue. I was also very stressed and had PPD and wasn't eating enough, so all of those things didn't help. I know better this time around though and DD has been nursing for a long time now.

I did have to supplement formula with her, but after we stopped the bottle (shortly after she turned 1), she breastfed often and continued to do so....and still does.

Anyway, I told my DH that I wanted to ask a lactation consultant since the OB isn't specialized in breastfeeding. Obviously I will do what I need to do for my newborn, but I don't feel like I have to cut DD off cold turkey....

Am I holding on too long? Should I cut her off cold turkey? Or are a couple simple nursing sessions a day fine to maintain?

I'm still nursing my two year old with no plans to wean. Our second is due in 6 weeks. Your body will adjust and make enough milk for both of them. Nursing is based on supply and demand, the more you nurse, the more milk you make. I'm new to this as well but I trust that the baby will get all the milk he needs. My son only nurses 1-3 times a day and sometimes actually not at all. I think he will initially nurse more because he will be jealous that the baby nurses so much, but in time I think he will go back to only nursing minimally. I anticipate it will be challenging having two nurslings, but I trust it will somehow all work itself out.

Obviously if YOU feel ready to wean, that's different. You have to do what's right for you, and if having two children nurse is going to be too much, then dont beat yourself up and do what you have to do. If you are going to wean, I'd start now.

Lots of people are able to nurse more then one child at a time.

Thanks ladies. I haven't stopped yet....one because we're not ready and TWO....I am hoping that her continuing to nurse will help my supply.

If you are on fb, come join the lovely and supportive group 'breastfeeding older babies and beyond'. Lots of people tandem nurse and will be happy to support you in your decisions 🙂
