So I had an emergeny tooth extraction Tuesday. Today the pain has been breaking through the ibuprofen and vicodin (hydrocodone). I looked and I don't see a clot...which I think should be a red/blood covering in the socket. So I think I'm getting dry socket.

I've read that clove oil (eugenol) works wonders...but there's not studies on it for medicinal purposes. Anyone have any advice or every dealt with dry socket while pregnant? It's the same thing the dentist uses I believe.

I just read that women on bc's are at risk of dry socket...due to the higher levels of estrogen....Pregnancy makes us a 24 hr estrogen factory...ugh!

FYI: Dentist said vicodin and ibuprofen were safe since I'm in 2nd tri and am not using it habitually throughout.

Oh you poor thing!!! I have had one of those and they're so painful!

Here's what I did when I had it ages ago, my oral surgeon suggested it - I got a chamomile tea bag (or whatever kind you like) and soaked it in ice water, then wrung it out and put it in the socket and bit down really hard. It helped with the pain so much, although it sounds like it would do the opposite!

Hmm, just Googled my tea bag advice and apparently the tannic acid in tea can help a blood clot to form in the socket which is what you want when you have dry socket - so if you have regular tea bags then try those instead of chamomile.

Ohhhhhh I've had one of those, so painful rather be in labour than go through that again!! I'm sure clove oil is ok. I used oragel extra strength and corodsyl mouthwash clove flavor and held it on there for about a min coz the painkillers wasn't helping. Hope the pain goes soon x x

I had dry root when I had my wisdom tooth out in August. DO NOT go to Dentist. She drilled inside to clear it out without any injections. I nearly slapped her.
Try the doctors. They gave me a medicated mouthwash that made my whole mouth numb. Worked a treat... eventually!

When I had a dry socket my Surgeon packed the socket with actual cloves. I do know though that Cloves and Clove oil are not recommended in pregnancy - although more so during 2nd trimester. I think they have a synthetic packing agent they can use that might be better for the baby so I would call the dentist and find out.

I used to be a dental assistant and the tea bag thing does work for some releif! Just like she said, black tea - and get the bag a little bit wet. If you go into the dentist they have some medication that they will out into the socket and it provides instant releif!
My suggestion is to just go into the dentist!
Good luck!

I'm sure there's a 'Wanted' poster somewhere with your dentist's photo on it!

Hi I had two dry sockets a couple of years ago after having all four of my wisdom teeth removed. It was so painful, one of the worst pains i've ever felt. I had to go back to the Dentist twice and they packed the socket with gauze soaked in clove oil, it worked wonders and the pain went almost immediatley. I would recommend you go to your Dentist. Take care. x
