Backstory: I was on this forum last year when I was trying to conceive. I had a beautiful daughter at the end of 2010 and was waiting to conceive again in another 3 months or so to produce a sibling for my daughter. I wanted to go back to back because I'm 36 and I know as I get older, my chances of successfully conceiving diminishes with time.

Problem: Yesterday I was admitted into emergency for an appendectomy. I had a CT SCAN that indicated my appendix was inflamed and/or infected. The surgeon who performed the surgery removed my appendix but also decided to remove the end of my fallopian tube because he said it was twisted resulting in dead tissue. I think the condition is known as hydrosalpinx from what I have gathered on the internet although he did not use that term.

I was just released last night and in severe pain, but now that I've had a chance to look into it, I'm pissed! This surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic surgery and has absolutely no OBGYN training, removed the part of my fallopian tube that gathers sperm to connect with an egg without my permission. I authorized him to take out my appendix, not F-up :growlmad: my fertility.

I'm basically working with one working fallopian tube and I'm afraid this is going to impact my chances of conceiving in the future. Obviously, as soon as I recover my from appendectomy, I'm going to have to seek the advice of a specialist to see what exactly happened. But in the mean time, I am really upset and quite frankly devastated!!! Has anyone gone through a similar situation?

TTCinLA it really sounds like you have been through the mill. So sorry to hear about what happened. I don't really understand how the operation works but I didn't think they would check your tubes while taking out your appendix- it sounds weird to me..

Regards fertility from what I have read up having one tube barely reduces fertility as apparantly even if the egg is released from the ovary which is blocked it can still waft over the the good tube. I know that sounds weird but I saw some documentary about it and having one tube really shouldn't have much of an impact.

In saying that though If I were you I would be getting on the hospital and demanding answers- maybe he had to do it, but you need to know how/why.

Hello there,
I have just experienced the opposite! My gynae needed to remove my right tube but when doing the laparoscopy found that my appendix was blackened and adhered so removed it too! What I do know from having hydrosalpinx is that it definitely harms your fertility, so if he has removed the infected/damaged part of your tube you would be in a healthier position than if you had left it be.
I appreciate it is a shock - I found out I have PID, basically lots of old infection that I knew nothing about and my other tube isn't in a great state either, plus our state funding has just been removed for IVF.
So while it is stressful to know that you're not 100% healthy at least you're now aware of where you stand?
BTW how are you recovering> I had mine late afternoon Thurs 3rd and while taking it easy am recovering well, despite picking up a cold/cough which could be better. Don't overdo it and get yourself well so you can TTC again!
Best of luck Georgie x
