Went to see my doctor tonight. He has given me a 5 day course of Clomid 50mg. Thing is I have not had a period since 8th April and everything I am reading on here says that you should not start taking it until after a period on a particular day of your period. I cannot do this as I am not having a cycle.

The doctor said that he cannot give me Provera as that has to be taken on CD21 to test your hormones? I have been taking pregnancy tests and took one on Sunday (FRER) and that came back negative. He hasnt done a blood pregnancy test or anything. What do you think I should do? Should I just take this 5 day supply and hope for a period 28 days or so later?

I did have bloods done on my hormone levels (thyroid etc) and he said they all came back normal.

He said under no circumstances was I to have sex for 2-3 weeks following taking Clomid but everyone on here is having sex after taking it which akes sense as it is stimulating ovulation. He is giving me conflicting advice.

Please can someone help.

Thanks.

get a second opinion hon. you can take progesterone to induce af,and it should have nowt to do with cd21 test... also, you need to have sex from 9 days after the first tablet for about 3 weeks for the best chance.

What is he on about?! Provera can be taken at any time as long as you are not PG. The advice is normally take a test, if its neg then start the pills! Some are advised to start the clomid without waiting for AF :)

But what an earth is he saying don't have sex for 2-3 weeks?! Is the idea of clomid not to get pg? Not having sex is kinda defeating the object!

I'd def get a second opinion!

Thank you both. I think the reason he has said not to have sex is because he doesnt want me to risk a multiple birth but the chances of that seem quite low and twins are all over both sides of the family and i would count catching with them a blessing anyway! :) I think I might wait til get back off hols as I dont like the sound of the side effects and dont wanna risk coming on while away x

I can understand that! And as for not having sex because of the multiple risk, that is so very strange. Its a fertility drug for goodness sake!

Ha ha I know! x I'd be too lucky to catch first time on that though I am sure. Plus its a nightmare sometimes getting the OH to BD in the week! lol x

Hi Emma, after what I've experienced this week I would definitely get a second opinion! As long as you aren't pregnant, you can take provera to bring on your period, then start taking clomid on day 2 of your period, well I take it on the 2nd day anyway, but you can even take it on day 3, or my first one was day 5! they just prefer the earlier, so your follicles will grom more I think. I did have a 60 day period last year then they went from 35 days to 45 days, and my blood tests showed I wasn't ovulating. I have to say I think its pretty early for him to be prescribing clomid seeing as you've not been off the pill that long, well what I mean is sometimes it takes a little longer than 6 months to settle down? If you'd have had several blood tests of which your progesterone levels were really low around day 21 or later if your cycles are longer, this would suggest you weren't ovulating and so would go on the clomid, but he realy should have given you provera to bring on the period, you shouldn't take clomid until you've had a period!
Let me know how you get on hun

xx

Thanks Jessica.

So if I was to take clomid now without having had a period for 70+ days would it not help me? I had a feeling the doctor was making a mistake as I know I have had provera in the past when I took a break from the pill and it didnt have to be started on a particular day. Should I make another appointment and get the Provera first then? x

Some people are advised to take clomid without a period, depends on the cons. My mum got PG with twins on her first clomid cycle after no AF for months!

I would quite welcome that to be honest. Twins run in the family. I am going to start taking it around the 29th June, so I have had all 5 before I go on my hols (3rd july) so hopefully all of the side effects have gone from them and as people are normally extra frisky on holiday I will hopefully get lucky! It wont make me start a period straight away though will it as I dont want to end up on my period on my holiday! :)

How long have u been off the pill? I find it strange him giving u clomid so soon.. only normally GPs cant give clomid only mine sent me to a gyno and having tests ect before even giving me any drugs to help with cycles..

xx

HI Emma, I would have probably gotten a second opinion, or asked for provera, but if some people have taken clomid when they've not had a period for a while then maybe its ok, I think maybe the reason you take it on the 2nd or 3rd day of your period to make sure you're not pregnant, but the bit about abstaining for 3 weeks is still odd! I'm off on holiday tomorrow for a week, thank goodness! but let me know how you get on. Good Luck!

I totally agree with this stament sometimes women do take it with out first having a period ive heard that you can because it just makes you ovulate even if you didn't take it during a period and sometimes they tell you to do this just so that you don't have to wait and you can get started TTC right away so its good news for you good luck and baby dust to you too.

Hey beauty, I guess I must have an understanding doctor. I know it has only been six months but I havent had a period and he knows I want to start trying to I guess I have been lucky. x

He Jessica, thanks for all your advice, where you off to on holiday? Hope you have a lovely time, and baby dust to you.

Thanks Mlohof, baby dust to you too xxx

Did the doctor give u clomid or did u have to see a gyno? Only i am confused, i have been referred to a gyno cause of long cycles etc and there doing scans etc before giving me any sort or medication? My GP told me that doctors can not supply clomid it has to be given by a gyno..

I just dont understand thats all.... I really think you should be having scans etc before even starting clomid, 6 months is nothing!! I know your TTC and you want it to happen but i just find it really stressing that the doctor gives you clomid after 6 months!!

Most doctors say you should give it at least 6 months for periods to return to normal after stoppin bc and even then there up the wall..

I think a second option is defo needed.. xxxx

Hi Beauty,

You know, I think you're right. I havent taken it yet. I am scared that I could be one of those people who could possibly be pregnant and have levels that dont show up properly on HPT's, rare I know, but still a possibility. I am not 100% sure whether the doc definitely did a blood HCG test either so I need to be sure of that too. I am going to ring back up and ask to go in. It was one of those appointments where I felt overwhelmed and rushed by the doc and then came out with loads of questions. I am going to make sure I have had a blood HCG and then ask for provera first, see how that goes. x

I defo think your right about waiting, i really disagree with him giving you clomid so soon of TTC, i mean 6 months is nothing, i know periods take time to return and i think u personally should hold out a few more months and wait, or at least ask him to refer you to a gyno who knows more and be able to give u scans etc before putting u on clomid!!

I know clomid can work wonders, and i hoping for it next month at off my gyno but i am having scans first etc and by then i would of been TTC for 14months and only prob 8 cycles so there so long, but least i know all the right scans would have been done by gyno and clomid is kind of a boost for me.. dont agree with it so soon in your case, not by the doctor anyway, i think you wanna ask to be referred first.. your prob get appointment through in next month and get some answers etc!!

Hope this helps..

Hi Emma, got back from hols on saturday, just went to Spain for a week, needed a break as the week before I was in and out of hospital! I had horrendous pains on the left hand side (around my ovaries) and didn't know what was happening, I had already had ovulation pain, but went for the trigger shot which I was scheduled for and I think I suffered hyperstilumation or something, I was already ovulating on the Clomid so not sure why I had to have the shot as well, anyway, AF arrived the other day and I was so upset, crazy in a way I don't want mine to show up now, where as you've been wanting yours to show so you can decide if you want to take the clomid! I'm having a month off this month, going to try not to think about it (easier said than done) then go back on the clomid next month. What did the doctor say about your bloods? Have you decided to start the clomid? Hope all's well let me know how you are.

Take care xx

I am a twin myself, and was only given a 10% chance (normal is 7%). No offense, but your DR sounds misinformed. I too recommend a second opinion.
