Hi there,

I just got home with new bub and have been planning on breast feeding... i've been having trouble with it... not because of him latching on.. just out of sheer exhaustion.. and its getting me really upset and frustrated :( i had him on the breast for a full 6 hours last night in hospital and the midwife ended up taking him and gave him 30 mls of top up which settled him and he went to sleep. I've still been trying all day and my nipples are just so tender and sore... i've been trying for hours again tonight... and i'm just getting myself in a state.. my otherhalf says i shouldnt be so hard on myself.. and that if i need to use formula then i should... so... i just opened one of those sma gold bottles from the hosp... and tried with one of those... the 100ml bottle. It's upsetting me seeing that ugly teat in his mouth... and he seems to have taken 40 mls of it far too fast... how much should he have had??? He's screaming for more I don't know what to do , any advice?? Help!! Please !!

I didnt have any milk supply, I also tried expressing but with no success. My LO was screaming at the hospital for milk so they had to give him some formula.

When I went hoem it was the same issue. So I went for FFing

Dont give up, keep trying, but if he's not satesfied just give him formula betwen feeds. It takes some times for some ladies to get their milk (maybe 2 wks), & the sucking will just make it come.

My advise, it u r unable to breast feed, dont feel so bad about it as u tried to do it. I went through some sort of depression because of it. & remember if ur LO is satesfied with what he's taking, this is what really matters.

Hope this would help.

I tried to bf in hospital and he just didnt take it at first so was on formula but i tried bf again the next night and he took it for hours but then didnt settle at all so the hospital gave him a bottle.

I was told that i need to decide how he is going to be fed and i decided to ff as he seems more settled and feeds better.

In hospital he was taking 40/50mls at a time and hes now taking 70/80mls (2 1/2 oz) at a time. He is settled and goes about 3 1/2 - 4 hours between feeds.

I know that i tried my best but he just didnt seem to take to it. As long as he is happy that is all that matters to me.

I hope things get better for you hun :)

:hugs:

My Anna took easily to breastfeeding and it was all going well for the first 8 days -then she got weighed and we were shocked she had lost 14oz!!

Midwife said I would need to express or get her on formula.

Tried expressing but hardly anything there so started her on Aptamil at 8 days old.

Every time she was hungry I would breastfeed her for about 15mins then top her up with 1 - 2 oz - I fed her when she was hungry - which was prob every 3 hours or so.

I am pretty much only using formula now and Anna's weight is picking up.

I would say make up 2oz (60ml) bottles and give when baby is hungry - make sure you dont let them go more than about 4hrs without a feed.

If baby is finishing the 60mls then up it to 90ml.

When I was in hospital I was told that baby should only be feeding about 20-30mins at a time - so 6hrs is ridiculous - baby is probably not even feeding - just getting comfort from you-not good for you!!

Good luck and congrats:flower:

Hi, Congrats!

Can't offer much help about the BF as I never had any milk, but the 40mls sounds about right if he was very hungry. I remember Evan had that for his first feed, then about 30-40mls on subsequent bottles.
If he still wants to feed, I would let him, and make sure he's getting regular feeds, even if it means topping up with formula. He will let you know when he's had enough (as long as he's not just comfort sucking, or you could be there all day!).

Good luck, and ask your MW as well during your home visit?
