i went to hospital today with some light spotting, they did a trace of babys heartbeat & noticed i was having some contractions so they did an internal scan and it showed that my effective cervix has shortened to 3.7cm of which 1.9 is funneling so effective cervix length is only 1.8cm....

what does this mean??

they gave me a steriod injection to mature the babies lungs and have to have another one tomorrow.... Am i going to be having baby soon??????

I'm not sure hun, but by the sound of it the doctors are preparing the baby for possible labour, maybe you should talk to your doctor/consultant tomorrow so that you know whats going on, they're there to help :flower:

ya thats what i'll do, i asked loads of questions earlier but cant remember a word they said - all a blur!!! i just wasnt sure does funneling mean certain pending labour

i think it means thats the direction ur goin in...
it could be a while yet but it does look like ur baby's comin sooner rather than later.
def ask them more questions tomorro xx

thanx girls... will ask them more tomorrow, hate the not knowing!

It does look like your baby is coming sooner rather than later sweetie. Ask about a cervical stitch although I think your cervix might be a little too far gone for this hun. Bedrest can also be advised to delay labour and they'll try and keep you as long as possible until your waters go.

It's great that you're getting steroids for babies lungs.

It might be an idea to start looking at babies born at 34weeks - your little one will be fine but might need a little help at first.

Good luck! xxx

thanks stardust.. you say my cervix is a little far gone, is this going by the numbers... i tried to google them but cant figure out what 'cervix shortened to 3.7cm of which 1.9 is funnelling' means..... not sure what is the norm or what any of it means

and... effective cervix length is 1.8cm... does that mean my cervix is only 1.8 now

Hi hun from what I have read up on during my pregnancy the funneling means the cervix is starting to open like a funnel so your starting to dilate. The length of your cervix isn't much of an indicator since you don't know the length of it before this. Perhaps googling it to find out the average length a cervix should be in pregnancy to compare. Usually the shorter it is the more effaced your cervix is getting.

Remember though that women can dilate and efface for weeks before their baby arrives so you might go a few weeks yet or if the contractions get stronger it might happen sooner.

Hopefully they can tell you more on this tomorrow. x

what does affaced mean?? is it the same as cervix shortening or funneling?? all i can get when i google it is 20 weekers cervix shortening...

im pretty sure the average length of cervix is 5cm when totally closed so it does look like they are expecting yr baby to come sooner rather than later however at 34 weeks yr baby is only 3 weeks off being full term so should do great x

thanx for reply! wish i could forward to my app tomorrow so i could ask more questions then! so nerve racking waiting :(
