yet another example of how it pays not to work :dohh:

Isn't this because Gordon Brown said it was a basic human right to have internet?

omg I don't like this one bit  The internet and computers is a LUXURY IMO. I don't mind taxes being spent on basic living expenses like rent, gas/elec, clothing and food but not luxuries like TVs and internet :growlmad: If they need a computer for school work or something, there's pcs in the library and internet cafes!

this country is just getting worse and pointing more people into not working as it seems that you get more help.

I swear my husband is leaving the raf and were going to live off benefits!!

Christ, wind your necks in everyone... It's not like they're giving out plasma screens to dossers in the pub. They're bringing children into the modern age, you can't penalise kiddies for their parents mistakes and... tbh, some of you are heavy bnb users so I'd like to see you go without internet in a poor household. Nothing wrong with it. Better than padding out alcys pockets, surely?

funny when i was younger some of my friends still had black and white tv's - and the government didnt want to bring us into the modern age - not having internet access at home is by no way whatsoever penalising the kids of those households - in the real world everyone doesnt have everything and thats the way things are - thats life - internet access is not a necessity, it is a luxury it is no way essential for day to day living

and as for people being heavy b&b users, yes i use the internet a lot, but i can assure you (with the exception of being on mat leave atm) my husband and i work damn hard to be able to have it

and being better than lining the pockets of alchoholics, it wasnt a choice of one or the other - that is a different issue entirely

We qualify for this from September...wont be claiming one though...we have a computer and internet so have no need.
You do realise this doesnt just encompass people "living off" benefit it includes low income families who may very well work very hard but earn very little.
Kids are taught computer skills right from reception age now because its vital to get into the workplace and a child going to say college or uni with no computer experience would be at a severe disadvantage. Not sure why its not limited to those households without computers/internet but there you go. Sure it will be abused by some people but not by all.
I would think that the people who will most benefit from this scheme are those who qualify for CTC but not WTC and who are on very low income from a job.

Unless colour tv is somehow more educational than black and white, I'd say it's really not the same thing.

The internet isn't JUST a fun plaything, it's also a medium of communication and learning. THAT is the modern age of technology. Not your colour tv.

I couldn't begrudge a child the ability to learn and communicate, for the sake of a few pence out of my pocket each year. I don't even begrudge the alcys at the pub tbh... It has never bothered me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you expect to live as a society that includes supporting those who can't support themselves and in modern society, those who won't. Such is life, but this really is the least of the government's ''failings'' and something I'm more than happy to contribute my pennies to.

Communication via the net can be a real lifeline to those so poor that they can't afford to fund it themselves or for the children born into families who don't care enough to provide for them.

These days nearly all homework is set onto websites that the children are expected to access. I know that some people abuse the system but not everyone and its not fair to tar them all with the same brush.

I do know that when my pc broke and i didnt have the money for a new one, as a single parent working all i could around the kids. I would of welcomed this. We lived out in a village, the nearest library and internet cafe was an hours bus ride away. So by the time he got out of school he wouldnt have time to get there before they closed.

So when they didnt have a chance to go to my mums and use hers, they got into trouble at school for not completeing it.

I do think it is a good idea.

Guess the disclaimer didn't work then eh?

I think it's terrible that there are some people who have been given a laptop from Home Access are now selling them on e-bay!
