Hi,

I've had blood tests at the GP due to my irregular cycles (post-pill) and go back next week for results and a chat....

I have no idea what they were testing for really - except looking at my hormones, and whether I am anaemic!?

Has anyone had any tests before, and what were they looking for?

I'm just wondering what to ask when I go back - if the hormones are not normal - what should I ask?

Any advice would be very appreciated!!

Good luck everyone TTC - fingers crossed for a BFP for us all!!

Thanks.

Hi,

Does no one have any advice/been through this before?

Any help would be appreciated so i can ask the right questions/know what to expect!

Thanks.
xx

I have no advice, but just wanted to say that I am going in Thursday for my bloodwork. I wouldn't worry about asking specific questions, the doctor will fill you in on what the bloodwork found. I know my doctor was looking at my estrogen levels, progesterone levels, LH, FSH, and thyroid function....and some other things but thats all I can remember. Is this your cd 21 bloodwork?

Hi,

Thanks for replying - I think I had exactly the same tests as you!

I have very irregular cycles, so I'm WAY past CD21, so no it isnt then!!! :dohh:

I think i'm on CD38 (?) but once I get past a certain point, i've gone months and months without AF, so I guess I may not have a CD21 for a while!

Do you have irregular cycles?

I get my results at the end of the week.

Good luck for your tests. xx

hey I had these tests done.

I know they checked my prolactin, thyroid hormones including tsh(prolactin because thyroid can sometimes make it high- have had hypothyroidism since i was 15), you fsh and other sex hormones along with your blood count - for anaemia. and for good measure they usually check your normal bloods - liver function, kidney function etc as the test all comes out the one sample.

Even if something does come up, the good thing is there is usually a way to treat it. One tiny imbalance can knock everything out. For me it's the thyroid, which can take a while to get under control but once it is it should be plain sailing with just a little pill or two to take each day.

Try not to worry, like I said most of these little imbalances can be easily fixed with a pill and you usually don't have to be on them long term (unless it is your thyroid or something).

Let us know how you get on :) x

I have irregular cycles (on CD110 or something right now), and I just went to my first Dr.'s appointment about it on Friday. She took blood, but also prescribed me prometrium for 10 days to induce AF. I don't know what she tested exactly, but I had a message on my phone yesterday from the doctor's office... so I have to call in about 30 min to find out about it!

Thanks! How did your results turn out? Did they find anything or were you ok?

I'm hoping it is something small that has knocked my cycles out and made them irregular, so that they can fix it and we can carry on TTC!!

I get the results at the end of the week, but my doc's appt to discuss is next Monday, so we'll see.

xx

not great but fixable :)

Bloods came back with a high prolactin level (the hormone preg women have for breastfeeding) I had a fair idea because I wasn't preg, never had a kid yet was lactating! Was relieved actually didn't know what it was and when you have swollen lumpy breasts you fear the worst! Went for a head ct was confirmed and put on parlodel as it wasn't too big that it needed surgery, that was nearly 8months ago now and the headaches have stopped my bbs have returned to their normal bee sting size and all is well.

The thyroid was the underlying reason for the prolactinoma tho. I hadn't had my thryo bloods done in a long time so was still taking my 125mg daily, that isn't enough for me now.. because it had gone so hypo for so long I'm now on 250mg daily, (this was the reason I wasn't ovulation too) now ovulating every other month - although feel this month may well be two in a row judging by the cm and temps so all is once again well :)

Things always seem so scary when we don't know... just knowing is often half the battle.. try not to think about it too much until you have to, us women are sensitve wee things and just a little stress can knock our cycles way off course :) definitely keep me updated xx

So the phone message wasn't very clear, but I could tell it was from the hospital where my Dr.'s office is, so I assumed it was about my bloodwork. Turns out it's about financial stuff. Yucky :/

So this means I HAVEN'T heard about my bloodwork. Should I call about it? Or do they normally call you when they get the results?

I would ring for your results, otherwise they'll probably just sit there. :dohh:

I have an appt Monday to discuss my results, so am waiting for that.

Could you make an appt to see your doc face to face?

xx

I suppose I could make that appt... but I don't have insurance and the hospital financial aid doesn't cover doctor's appts even if they practice there. I should have another appointment in about a month though. I just have to wait for my induced AF to come (5 more days of prometrium first) then call to make an appointment for my CD21 bloodwork. I guess when I call for that appointment I will ask them about the previous bloodwork if I haven't heard anything by then.

My cycles are long and irregular too, been between 37-62 days since going off bcp in October. So, it's kind of silly that my doc ordered the bloodword for cd 21 (which is typically done when women ovulate around cd 14), since I haven't ovulated yet, but that's what she wanted to do! It obviously won't show increased progesterone as if I've ovulated, but it's looking at other stuff too. Thank you, good luck to you too!

did they take your bloods at day 3 of your period? if not they arent looking at you FSH level which is connected to potential infertility, just ask for a copy of your results
