Just spoke to the midwife I've had assigned to me and asked if they would do an early/reassurance scan as I'm worried after having 2 miscarriages between June and November 2011. I was told that because of the lack of funding they no longer offer it unless you are bleeding  Really don't know how I will get through the next 8 weeks with all this worry

A lady I know also experienced a miscarriage last year was offered an early scan when she conceived again a month later. It just doesn't seem fair at all that we get all this worry just because there isn't enough funding for a 15/20 minute scan that will put our minds at rest

Has anybody else experienced this or can offer any advise?

hi babes i had to go through 5 losses at 12-15 weeks before they offered me scans this time :-(

Looking at your location - I'm kind of surprised. I had two early miscarriages last year, and actually got referred to see the recurrent miscarriage consultant up at QMC - just to get onto her books really, not that they'd do massive amounts of investigations until I'd lost three obviously - but it meant when I got pregnant this time they wanted to do early scans to see what was going on as my losses all seemed to be around the similar point in time mark... so I was scanned weekly from 6 weeks to 11 weeks up at the EPU - and that was only at the back end of 2011 (I'm 29 weeks now if you do the maths).

Sorry about your 2 mcs :hugs:

It is so frustrating that some places refuse to do a scan until you have 3 mcs, but I think you should really push for a scan. I had 2 mcs between July and September last year and I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. When I was 6 weeks I was suffering from terrible cramping, and anxiety with it. I phoned the hospital asking for a scan and they refused several times but I ended up phoning and almost demanding they see me (I burst into tears on the phone the final time I spoke to them) and they finally agreed to give me a scan.

Failing that, I know you shouldn't really need to do this, and I don't know your financial situation, but as a last resort if it came to it, could you maybe consider going private? Where I am it is about £100, although I know there is a place in Perth in Scotland who does it for £45! Is there anywhere like that near where you are as £45 is reasonable for peace of mind?

But I'd keep pushing for a scan hun, if they see how stressed you are they might agree.

Good luck!

xx

I had to go private to get an early scan at the early pregnancy unit (we ultimately went private for the pregnancy as we wanted one-to-one attention due to my age (43 at the time) and previous mc horror at another hospital.

Could you approach your GP, rather than your MW, as they might be more sympathetic as you are a long-term patient of theirs (I assume?)....My GP rang the epu herself and arranged my scan....

best wishes (and here's hoping for a happy and healthy 9 months!)

Hiya hun, I know the waiting is horrible. I am 4+1 weeks today and I had a mc at 4+5 weeks on the 6th if feb, so ive got preg on the cycle right after my mc. I am extremely worried and nervous. Even though I mc'd last time my midwife won't even SEE me until 8weeks never mind scan me! :( just seen you're in Nottinghamshire and wanted to let you know there is a place called proscan in nottingham that do early scans from 5 weeks for £75. I really don't think it's that bad for private, I'm going to have one done in about 3 and a half weeks for peice of mind :) I can't really afford to be shelling out £75 myself but it will be worth every penny just to put my mind at rest and see my little ones heartbeat :) hope this helps hun! Xx

yes the waiting is almost unbearable, i also suffered one miscarriage at 7 weeks and then a mmc at 12 weeks and this time round my doctor rang through to the epu at 9 weeks and requested an early scan which was refused because now they only do early reassurance scans if you are bleeding - i was so upset but i got there in the end and im so lucky in saying i saw my baby and its heartbeat at the 12 week scan , im now 15 weeks and keeping everything crossed for my 21 week scan. Just hang in there and keep thinking positive ( i know easier said than done but try).

Thank you for all your responses, private is £75 around here and dh refuses to pay for an early scan because the mc happened at the 8 week mark although we didn't know until the 12 week scan. Like you already said they only do early scans now if you have bad cramping or bleeding, doesn't matter how many mc's you've had. how can so much change in 6/7 months :growlmad:

My gp has been useless despite being at the same surgery since birth, when I went to see gp to confirm the pregnancy, all was said was congratulations go to the reception and get the number for the midwife centre to be allocated a midwife  Just felt like I should of just missed going to see the gp and rang for a midwife instead. Nobody seems to understand or care that I feel like I'm just waiting for the worst to happen  Everytime I go to the bathroom I expect to see blood, don't know how I will cope for the next 8 weeks feeling like this

On the positive though, I'm feeling nauseous and queezy like I did with my 2 healthy pregnancies. Felt the nausea as soon as I had a positive test :happydance:
