Hot Drinks - what is 'safe'?

I read somewhere that even chamomile isnt safe.

Oh gosh thanks for this thread!
I am a fruit tea addict and I've just looked at the packets and every single one contains hibiscus :( Lucky I read this

My other addiction is camomile, honey and vanilla tea - I thought camomile was fine....does anyone know the problem with it??

Eeek...I love my camomile and honey as well :(

After a quick search I found this...may be helpful. I think, like many things, it's safe in moderation.

I've been drinking peppermint, sometimes chamomile and fruit teas. I read the kinds of herbal teas you need to avoid are the true Herbal tea w/ St. John;s wort or Kava Kava for example. Anything in the grocery store is typically fine although it is tough to know what's in these things and there is a lot of contridictory information about herbs.

I have decaf sometimes too but I have thought about the chemicals so I drink swiss water process when i can. Peppermint tea is the most satisfing...maybe becasue its refreshing it almost work to pick me up.

thanks for that AFC - that certainly sounds like sensible information....and I agree, there is a big difference between mecicinal strength herbs and teas!

I think i'll be staying away from the hibiscus though

I had a very bad all nighter MS after having camomile tea at around five weeks. There is no way I am touching this stuff again. It's like the baby does not want me to sleep through the night anymore. Would give anything for an eight hours sleep :(

i dnt know about hot drinks but i would like to know if anyone knows if spicy food is ok to eat when pregnant??????

I love spicy food. I eat it all the time. It's only an issue if you get heartburn from it, then you may want to take it easy.

i ask because i have an addiction to bombay bad boy pot noodles! they are the only thing i can eat right now! x

Hey, yes seems the jury is out on chamomile. Looking on some herbal related websites now I found this:

Women’s Health: Antispasmodics relax not only the digestive tract but other smooth muscles, such as the uterus, as well. Chamomile’s antispasmodic properties support its age-old use to soothe menstrual cramps and to lessen the possibility of premature labor.
Oddly enough, chamomile was also used to stimulate menstruation. The apparent contradiction remains unresolved, but European researchers have isolated a substance in chamomile that stimulates uterine contractions. Women should feel free to try chamomile both to soothe menstrual cramps and to promote the onset of menstruation, but pregnant women should steer clear of medicinal amounts.

I think I will steer clear of it, I dont normally drink it much anyway so thats OK for me. It sounds like in moderation it might be OK, but definitely used with caution in first tri xx

Ive drunk tea my whole pregnancy and im fine! so is baby... just not to exceed 200mg a day.
