hi!

I am start uni in september and am trying to plan ahead with finances etc - i am currently in a council house and paying full rent as i work full time.

When I leave my job in september to start uni would i be elegible for housing benefit? I get a non taxable bursery from uni of around £800 a month. but would never be able to pay rent/council tax/bills/food bills etc with this!

And as it's non taxable do i have to declare it?

i think u should be eligible for at least some of it if not all, best thing is to go down there and they will be able to tell u for definate. hope this helps. x

I definately think you would be entitled to something. Have a meeting with your local council x

you can get housing benefit if you have a dependent child living with you so ................................yes!

why can't you get it hun??

from direct.gov

Who may be able to claim income-related benefits as a student?Full-time students
Although most full-time higher education students are not entitled to income-related benefits, certain groups may be able to make a claim.

The full rules are listed in the Income Support and Housing Benefit regulations. But as a general guide, you may be able to claim income-related benefits if you:

•are a lone parent
•have a partner who is also a student - and one or both of you are responsible for a child

It does say may so perhaps it depends on OH income???

I've looked into this already and I'll geet most of it payed for me. I don't know what bursaries your getting from uni, but I presume it's the loans and grants from student finance? If it is then make sure you apply for the special support grant instead of the maintenance grant (your entitled to this because of the baby) this is not counted as income for means tested benefits and it doesn't reduce the amount of your loan (for example this year my loan was something like £4700 but it got reduced by £1800 because of the grant) you will also get full child tax credits which is £65 a week and child benefit which is £20 a week, if you need any more help then feel free to pm me if I don't know the answer I'll ask my studet advisor x
