I work as a part time waitress at Applebee's, so it's not like my leaving for a bit will be a big deal. I'm just curious how to go about this as a part time employee. Is pulling the general manager into the office to tell her privately too much of a big deal? Should I casually bring it up to her in passing? I'm not sure how to go about this at all.

I would love to get it out so that when she sees me taking a seat for a minute or two I don't get yelled at to go find something to do! My feet start to hurt so much and I just don't have the energy I used to. Also I don't want to be asked to carry heavy racks of silverware that were already a struggle for me before. (I'm not very strong lol) I'm only 14 weeks so my belly is easy to hide for now.

When and how is best to go about this?

I would tell her. In my old part time supermarket job, with my previous pregnancy, I told my manager at 9 weeks as I was feeling so I'll and would have to go off and sit down every so often. I wanted to wait a but longer before saying anything but it had to be done.

Print know how it works there but in the UK employers are mean to carry out risk assessments at different stages of your pregnancy. Got me this meant my manage could adjust my role slightly by not letting me go up the ladders in the warehouse, that sort of thing.

I would definitely say something now you are 14 weeks, if it means you won't be expected to lift heavy things.

Even though it's part time work, I would still ask if you can have a word in private and tell her. You can then discuss what you are comfortable or not comfortable with (ie not lifting heavy objects)

Good luck :)

I just told my coworkers and I'm 14 weeks, although my bump is bigger (second pregnancy) so I don't think I could have hided it for much longer! I know its sort of like ripping off a band-aid though.. good to just get it over with! I would pull her aside and just let her know you are expecting and so you really can't lift heavy things.

I wouldn't mention it in passing, even though you are part time you are still important. Id ask to speak to her privately.

That way, you can get cut some slack when you need to sit down, and you wont have to carry heavy things. :)

I had to tell my boss super early (5 weeks) because I had MS and the gripers were griping. (someone is sick!! why do sick people come to work! I am going to go to HR!!) I just went into her office and blurted it out lol.

I agree that you should pull her aside to tell her - that way you can go over any light duties you need.

I would go in during a time that isn't a super busy time and pull her into the office to let her know. Maybe before or after a shift? Also, if you don't want your coworkers to know right away, make sure you tell her that it is important she keep it under wrap until you are ready to spill the beans.

I'm a teacher, so when I told my principal i saw him walking down the hall and said hey can i talk to you for a minute? then just said i thought i'd let you know so it isn't a big surprise later, that i am pregnant. I plan on working up until the baby is born and coming back afterwards as well. He was very kind and congratulated me and that was that! I don't think it needs to be a huge announcement, and legally you don't even have to tell your employer, but i do think it is nice to let them know.

It's also good to tell your co-workers. I find mine being extra cautious for me. I'll go to carry things and they all say oh no, let me do that for you!

I forgot to mention I'm so hesitant because I miscarried my first pregnancy last year. I wasn't at this job, but I did tell everybody I knew and it was horrible having to re tell everybody that I wasn't pregnant anymore.

I miscarried my first pregnancy, and everyone at my office new I was pregnant. I was very lucky though and everyone was super supportive when I miscarried.. and even more supportive when I got pregnant again. Just depends on your work environment.

I don't think there is anything wrong with co-workers knowing, but I figured you don't want your boss telling everyone, and would rather tell everyone yourself.
