My lo is nearly 16 weeks and from about 5 weeks old he has been swaddled for all sleep. Well yesterday he rolled from front to back for the first time and is trying his absolute hardest to go the other way so it looks like now is the time to stop swaddling.

My question is how do I make the transition? Last night was the first time he was not swaddled and it went really well. He self settled to sleep, woke up about the same times in the night as usual and actually slept in a bit later than usual this morning. Well today for naps it has been a different story! He has screamed and screamed going to sleep. In the end I resorted to holding his arms down which felt really mean but he was asleep within a couple of minutes. He then woke up after 5 minutes and I had to settle him again. Also whn he would usually nap for about 1 1/2 hours he is now waking after just 50 minutes. How can I help him adjust to having his arms free?

I just stopped. She was always swaddled then i decided id rather use grobags so i just swapped to those and she was fine with it. Maybe if he isnt taking to it you could just do it for naps but not at night then gradually stop for one nap then two and so on? x

Zipadee zip! :) cause I had a swaddle addict

I did it in stages, first stage was to swaddle with 1 arm in and one out, them once he was used to his I them did the swaddle from his armpits down and both arms out, then once used to hat we moved to a sleeping bag :)

This is how we're weaning. We have nights, like last night, where we have to go back to swaddling for real. One step forward and two steps back. :haha:

Im trying the one arm out thing too some nights it worls ad others hes awake lots of times a night! :(

Can I ask (and I am not being rude just genuinely curious but without tone of voice this may sound sarcastic) how is this different to being in a sleelpsuit with hands covered and in a sleeping bag?

I thought about sticking with not swaddling at night as last night went ok and gradually taking an arm out at a time as others have suggested for naps when I am able to keep an eye on him in case he rolls.

I was going ask the same thing but didn't want too incase I was missing the point and looked stupid lol. Glad I'm not the only one.

We've not long started swaddling few weeks or so, don't know why he started waking himself up and I'm dreading having to stop that's why I'm stalking your thread in preparation lol x

Do I have to stop swaddling by a certain age or something? We are still swaddling...at almost 6 months. And the times we have tried sleeping without it are terrible!

It's advised to stop swaddling when they can roll from back to front due to them not being able to push themselves up.

Because being in the Zipadeezip suit they still have boundaries, if that makes sense. They're still enclosed and all cosy whereas if they were in a sleepsuit with hands covered they have full range of motion and that's sometimes a bit startling for a LO who is used to being swaddled. It's a nice transition.

With the Zipadeezip they can still roll and push themselves up, etc.

Hi, We still swaddle my lo cos he rubs his face at night and wakes himself up even tho we put him in babygrows with intergrated mitts on. Do you think this would help with that? thanks xxx

The shape/fit of the zippy makes it different. I had some sleeping bags given to me, they all failed miserably. And he kept breaking out of his swaddle and crying at night. It gives them "edges" like in the womb so they feel safe. Works like a charm for my LO, he went to sleeping all night long.

oh, I see erika answered it already! but they really do work wonders!
