Do all of you ladies put the formula powder in water that is 70 degrees?

Or do you put the hot water in the bottles and keep out ready for formula when needed?

Or do you put the hot water in the bottles, cool it down and then keep the bottled water in the fridge and take out to mix with formula when needed?

Or do you put water from the boiled kettle into a flask? Or the water that has been cooling down for half an hour into the flask?

I really don't get it? Sorry, I feel like such an idiot! xxx

Don't feel like an idiot, I haven't got a clue really either! I'm using SMA Gold and I boil the kettle, leave 10 mins ish then put it in the bottle. I add the formula straight away and it seems to be ok so far. I think it depends on the type of milk, I know some of the comfort and anti - reflux milks require cooler water (45mins cooling before adding powder). I don't pre-make bottles or use a thermos as I'm too scared of getting it wrong. So each bottle is freshly made as I explained and then I use a bowl of cold water to cool it to the right temperature.

Thanks there... after frantic internet researching I've decided to see how this goes. I put the needed scoops in a Tommee Tippee storage pot. I'm keeping one half boiled water in the bottle and then when needed I'll put hot water in the bottle and then mix the formula with it. I just write on the storage pot how much water to put in the bottle for hubby if he makes it.....It makes sense to me I guess  Then when I go out I'll take the water bottle with me and just have to go to a cafe for some hot water to measure it out! Good excuse for a Costa! :haha:

After much heartache over this subject this is what i have recently started doing and for the last 3 weeks LO has been fine. After much reading on the internet i couldnt get it straight in my head so I consulted my NCT mums and SIL who bottle fed her two from the ages of 2 weeks onwards, over how they do it and they all did it like this so this is what i now do:-

After i put her to bed at 7pm, i boil the kettle, wait 30 mins then fill 2 bottles (one for the night and one for the next morning), leave to cool on the side, add formula when feed is needed. Sterilise 3 bottles for the next day.

Next morning after her 7am bottle, boil kettle, leave to cool for 30 mins, fill the 3 sterilized bottles, leave on side and add formula when bottle is needed. Wash bottles from the night/early morning feeds, sterilize and leave in sterlizer ready to do the evening bottle routine again.

I was concerned about the 70 degree thing and went round and round in circles, drove myself up the wall with it then just decided to take the risk. It was too much hassle taking hot water out with me etc. Its easier this way and LO has been absolutely fine as have all the other babies.

I boil the kettle then let it cool. Then put into bottles for the day. Warm it when i need it and then add powder. OR what i tend to do now is just pre make all the bottles for the day, put in fridge, then warm when needed x

Personally I think the 70 degree thing is rubbish. It is not possible to know what temp your water wil be after 30 minutes. It will depend on the amount of water in the kettle, the temperature of the room, the type of kettle, all sorts!

For my daughter (exclusively ff) we filled bottles with boiling water and let them sit out till needed. With my son (bf till 6 months) we do a combination of that and making up as needed. No problems with either. I never wait 30 minutes, but if making for immediate use then I will cool some first since the scoop becomes damp from the steam.

Mine needs to be 50 degrees c so I boil it, stick it in the bottles and then put the bottles in cold water so they cool down quicker and then I use a thermometer specifically for this and add the formula when it reaches the correct temperature. I stick them in the back of the fridge and reheat when needed. Had no problems this way.

I fill my bottles up with the water and add formula as needed. My sister did this with all three of her kids and they turned out fine. My lo hasn't had any problems either so far anyway. I started off making them as you go but its just too awkward and my lo is unpredictable and could want another bottle 2 hours after another or could go for 4/5 hours. Dont stress it I think lot of women are confused about it.

my twins are now 5 months and I have been exclusive formula feeding...I boil the water in my kettle and then transfer to a smaller pitcher and then use that to fill my bottles and then I add the powder....mix and cap and place in fridge...I make enough for the day...my scoop gets a little damp from the steam but no big deal...I find the hot water dissolves the powder faster and the high temp kills any bacteria in the formula...I would not stress to much...the main thing to be correct always on is the powder to water ratio...too diluted baby does not get nutrition that is needed and too strong baby will get dehydrated!

I use Hipp which needs to be made at a cooler temp because of the friendly bacteria. I boil kettle, wait 45-50 mins then put the water in a big thermos flask and then use the water to make bottles as needed since you can't premake with Hipp.

This is really stressing me out!

I was filling bottles with boiled water in the morning for the day and again at night and then adding formula when baby wanted a feed, but my health visitor came and told me I couldn't do it this way.

I really don't know what to do now! LO seems fine doing it that way, my sister feeds her 6 mo this way with no problems, but I feel guilty! :( My LO is still unpredictable with his feed times and impatient, so there's no way he'll wait for the kettle to cool or me to cool a bottle!

Day feeds are no problem but night feeds are a nightmare! It's do hard to know what to do for the best!

Im glad im not th only one stressing about this. I have been boiling the kettle and filling the bottles with water for the day and the same at night then leaving out on the side to cool to room temperature. Then i add the formula as an when needed. My LO takes his bottles at room temperature so this has worked out the best for us. It was only lats night that i found out about the 70 degree thing so have been stressing ALL day about what to do for the best. I feel guilty that i could be putting my baby at risk by doing it this way but ts what works best and in the 11 weeks we have been doing it he hasnt been ill?
I just dont really know anymore :(

So glad it's not just me! I really am getting myself in a right state over this, I feel useless and totally lost! :( I'm totally lost!

:hugs: I think im going to carry on as i was for now well at least for tonight. Ive poured myself a nice glass of wine and i am NOT going to stress anymore today (i spent 3 hours awake in the middle of the night last night trying to figure the best thing to do!)

Good idea! I'm gonna do the same tonight and think about it some more in the morning, and then decide on a system and stick to it! x

I've been boiling the water, putting it in bottles to cool and adding formula as she wants to eat. My formula can says to add the formula to water that is 37 degrees (Celsius). I've never heard of having it 70 degrees until I came on here.

I have decided that i will make all my bottles up in the morning. Going to.let the water cool for 30 mins put in bottles with formula rapid cool and store in the back of the fridge. Ill just take them out a bit before he is due a feed so that it takes the chill.off. At night ill just warm them slightly ! When i go out il stock up on cartons! Thats it no more stressing out about it!!!

During the day I don't mind making bottles up fresh as I can see when he's stirring so I can make it up ready for him waking. At night however I boil the kettle before we go to bed, fill 4 sterilised bottles, seal them and take them up to bed with us. When he wakes up in the night for his feed I just put the formula in and he takes it no problem... ofcourse I didn't tell the HV this, she would have had a fit. But plenty people seem to do it and their babys are fine!
I got formula containers from mothercare which are great, just means I can pour it straight into the bottle as they're pre measured. Happy baby only has to wait 60 seconds tops for his bottle!!xx

The plan that I had works for us really well.

- I boil the water, fill a couple of bottles up to around 3/4s of what is needed when its cooled down for 30 mins(one of my bottles went a bit skewiff after I poured it in right away!).
- I have pre measured pots (tommee tippee containers)
- When needed to make up I boil the kettle and fill to the required amount, mix the formula and done!

We can take these out with us too. Just as long as we have access to some hot water (Costa! :haha:)

xxx

Ummmm I have been giving my newborn room temp formula since 2 weeks old, is that bad? the dr actually fed her room temp formula after she snipped her tongue tie, said nothing of warming it?? I only warm at night as it's nicer for her...I didn't wanna be having to cart around a thermos for bottles..!!??
