How long does it take for your milk to dry up once you stop breastfeeding?

I am not ready to stop yet but was wondering for when I do make the decision. I had thought about stopping a few weeks ago but felt really guilty about it so have kept it going for now!

It depends on how often you are nursing. By the time my son weaned himself at 14 months, he was nursing twice a day and I was pumping once. When he stopped I kept pumping the once a day for a couple of days just to prevent the engourgement thing, and when I stopped that- I never had any problems with leaking or engourgement. If you are exclusively breastfeeding and stop, it can take a week or so before you start to dry up and the discomfort passes. You may still leak a few times after that (like when baby cries), but that will also pass.

thanks ragirl, is it possible just to feed morning and bedtime without getting full and uncomfortable during the day?
