and how long on each side?

Any idea how long it takes for the full fat hind milk to come through?
My doc told me that eventually baby will get it together adn should manage his full feed in 5 or 10 minutes. At the mo it's taking about 30 or 40 (in total, between 2 sides)...but sometimes only 10 on each side before he falls asleep....is that long enough for the full juciy milk to come through do you think?

Thanks for sharing your ideas :-)

Hi

Mine takes around 40 on a good feed but sometimes she's on there for hours- no joke!
She then falls asleep on me, but as soon as i put her in the moses basket she's awake & wants another feed!!!!

Do u think shes just getting used to my body heat??

It only takes a few minutes for the hindmilk to come forward.

I allow lo to empty the breast no matter how long it takes.

In this situation, your' baby's poo is the indicator. The more green the poo the less hindmilk he's getting. The more mustard yellow the more hindmilk. As an aside, your baby's gassiness also indicates how much hindmilk he's getting. gassier babies TEND to get only the foremilk... But all babies are different. Just offerering that .

Because I have a godly amount of storage, and I tend to over produce, I lean toward 'block feeding'. That is feeding from the same breast for more than one feed. This makes sure LO is getting all the hindmilk from my breasts.

Right now LO is feeding about 20 mins on average at a time. When she feeds less, and she's hungry within a couple hours, I give her the same breast. If she takes longer, and she sleeps a bit longer, I give her the opposite breast.

My lo is 2 months old today.

you're so helpful!!

OK; so Ted's poop is just like dijon mustard, so maybe I should be OK? He does get gassy though. block feeding...hmm...could be worth me trying. or just doing each feed from one side - it seems to take an age to empty, in fact I'm not sure he's ever managed it by himself. LAst night after about 40 mins or maybe an hour he had only 20ml left (I pumped after to check) so i was vey pleased with him. He was so full up (I assume) he only awoke for one night feed between 11 and 7am!

now my biggest challenge is to get him to keep opening wide. but we're learning.

thanks again - you're such a handy person to know!!

Sounds good to me!

He does get gassy though.

I'd guess that's still due to him 'learning' how to suck at the breast vs. bottle. He's probably taking in more air because he's learning. It should get better and better AND as he gets older, he'll be able to deal with it eaiser and easier. :happydance:

Probably not... you're producing more than he eats in a feed, and he's still learning how to breastfeed. It took Sharlotte a really long time at first too - like 45-70 minutes!

Now she only takes about 30 mins. I like block feeding for my production. I make sure to empty each breast, but I'm carefull to only keep her on the same breast if it's within about an hour or two. Even two hours is pushing the envelope a bit.

Congrats mama!

Oh I'm in the SAME BOAT you are... Little Miss Sharlotte likes to be lazy and "slurp" the nipple into her mouth rather than open her mouth and take it. Yowwww!

As always, Margerle said it all so well:rofl: I think my son was nursing for 40 min a side initially and eventually, at his quickest, was able to empty the breast in 10 min.
