Some of you may remember my previous post about DDs eczema. We have been back to the doctors and she said to just use olive oil for 6 weeks. As she instructed we used it 3 times a day for 2 weeks and we noticed it just seemed to be getting worse. How long do I give it before going back? I've heard coconut oil works so have been using that for the last couple days. That doesn't seem to be making a difference, its just staying the same. I wonder if I'm not giving it long enough to actually work. The Dr didn't seem to bothered and just said the eczema wasn't a problem and she has seen much worse and there is still time for DD to grow out of it, I'm sure she has seen worse but just because it isn't as bad as someone else doesn't mean it isn't a problem.

If your not happy I would go back to Dr's. My DD has eczema and was instructed by doctor to use olive oil and then coconut oil but I found both aggravated her skin (red and lumpy). I initially went to pharmacist as found dr wasn't taking me seriously and he suggested epiderm. I used it for a few days and noticed a real difference so went back after two weeks to doctors discussed her eczema and he agreed to put it on repeat prescription.

It was a bit of a battle but I am glad I returned to doctors x

Olive oil has actually now been advised not to be used and to use vegetable instead but I would go back. Excema needs to be tackled straight on, it's like putting a fire out with a dripping tap.

Epaderm, cocoa butter, diprobase, doublebase, aveeno, cetraben.. all good emolients to be used and if it's really bad, hydrocortisone starting at 0.5%. My DS has quite bad excema and it's taken us a month to really establish best treatment but it's so different per baby.

Will pop back next week then. I just realy feel like because it isn't an extreme case they won't take me seriously. The last Dr we saw is usually quite good, she is extra cautious but this time didn't seem interested.

Olive oil not advised as it can cause redness, sunflower or veg oil is better, however if the eczema is a real problem then this won't help.

We had the sane as you, dr said eczema wasnt that bad and told me just to moisturise loads. Her eczema got worse and is now severe, she's on steroid cream which is the only thing that helps her face.

I'm upset i left it as long as i did to kick up a fuss for her as she was obviously in pain and unhappy, and unfortunately now realise that a lot of doctors don't know much about eczema. If that's your doctors attitude I'd probably try a different one in the hope they're more sympathetic.

Olive oil and coconut oil both made ds worse. They're high in oielic acid (spelling??) which is not good for eczema. Some people swear by coconut oil but it wasnt for us. DS's eczema was horrible bit aveeno cream, bath oil and bria organics balm and bath oil is what worked for us. They also have a body oil which is great so if you want a natural oil recipe that works you could look up the ingredients and make your own maybe? It's the balm that's awesome though.

My son has very dry skin and mild eczema (though he does have a scar at 6mths) and I'm amazed your drs didn't take it more seriously. There was no hesitation in our Gp prescribing hydrocortisone cream to have at home and gave us Oilatum Bath oil and Aveeno moisturiser. Perhaps it's because I had eczema (and I still have plenty of things I avoid as they trigger a reaction) or maybe because of the scar, but we were listened to straight away. Growing out of something, doesn't mean you ignore it. You still treat the condition. Eczema is really unpleasant and even a mild case can affect sleep

We have previously been given hydrocortisone but it made no difference she has also been using oilatum for months with very little change. I went back an she suggested olive oil. She wouldn't prescribe aveeno. I might just go out and buy some myself because the olive oil an coconut oil don't seem to be making a difference.

I totally agree, it needs to be dealt with asap. It does seem to be getting worse, it started as a fee patched but is now most of her tummy, back , tops of arms andlegs. I just don't want to seem like a pain and I imagine it is much worse for others but this is effecting my baby. She may grow out of it , but its a problem for her now.
I don't even think about having an impact on sleep. Might explain why DD is such a crap sleeper.

Do try Aveeno. It seems to really help my son. Every other cream I tried he reacted to and it's definitely helped to.hydrate his skin. Funnily enough I don't think I could use Aveeno though as there is something about the texture that makes my fingers feel a little weird. I can't really describe it, but after years of having issues I normally have a bit of an instinct by smelling something or by the initial touch. Oilatum works wonders for me. I don't think it specifically makes any difference to S but having something I can wash him with is good enough for me. His scalp used to go bright red and he would scream when we washed him in anything other than plain water. Eczema really is different for everyone. I can't use aqueous solution and stuff that advertises themselves as fragrance free normally end up being far too drying for me. I wouldn't be able to use a perfumed cream though, just something in between!
