DH and I seem to bicker at the moment as he thinks we are buying top many clothes. We have
- one hat
- three bibs
- one sleep suit, vest and grow suit new born
- as above for 0-3 months

The thing is I don't really know what we need and how many! I keep being told by DH that everyone will buy us clothes but we both have small families and not many good friends. Plus I am enjoying looking at outfits.

I get there is no point spending £43 on one outfit and happy to buy from Tesco etc but what do I actually need and how many?

I went to a baby resale store and bought a bunch of onesies in different sizes for like 5 cents each. we arent buying a loy of outfits until we see what we get from baby shower

I've bought 6 x newborn vests and sleepsuits and 6 x 0-3 vests and sleepsuits, plus a lots of bibs and a few snow suits. We are team yellow so don't want to but too much in white/cream and I think that will do to get us started.

I keep getting told the same thing but having tried to get pregnant for so long I'm indulging myself and buying a few nice outfits in various sizes!. The things baby will use the most are vests and sleep suits so stock up on those. my NHS book says between 6-8 of each xxx

My mum (3 kids) says you want at least 10 of everything as in sleepsuits, vests just because babies can go through so many a day in the beginning where they get wee on there, sick, milk, spit, food lol I have about 150 tops/bottoms/suits etc from ages newborn to 3 months but I tend to over=prepare so dont feel like you need this much! lol At the end of the day you can always buy just a few (say 5) of each major thing and if you need more when the baby comes to save on washing etc you can get them then.

Remember you aren't going to NEVER go to the shops again afer baby comes! x

Oh I forgot to had stuff like hats and mittens, but these are just the white ones from Tesco.

I don't think you should rely on other people to buy the things you need for your baby, so ignore your DH!

I'd say you definitely need more vests and sleepsuits!

We went a bit overboard I guess with our first but even so it's not unusual to go through 3 vests or sleepsuits in a single day, especially if you have a sicky baby.

As you can buy packs of 3 or so cheap enough from tescos and asda then it means you don't have to spend fortune. We let our parents each buy an outfit for the baby to wear straight away but we asked that anyone else buy clothes in either 0-3 or 3-6 months. We even had a few 6-9 outfits bought for us which was great.

I'd say 2-3 hats is plenty but you can never have too many bibs. My daughter brought up milk after every feed and you need to put the bib straight for wash as the smellof stale milk is vile! I'd also say to get plenty of muslins, we had about 6 and bought more.

As for things like scratchmits we had a few pairs but my daughter would not keep them on so were totally a waste.

I forgot to say, don't assume you'll get lots of clothes bought for baby in newborn or 0-3. Most people will tend to go for the older ages assuming that you'll already have plenty of the smaller sizes. Also some people won't even buy clothes, they'll buy things like toys, teddies and blankets etc.

I found that when she was little DD spent most of her time in baby grows. She would wear at least one during the day and change to a differnt one at night. Plus there was extra times she would need changing for vomitting/pooping issues. She sometimes got dressed into outfits if we went out but she didn't need many.

I'd say you need 2 vests and 2 baby grows per day between wash days, then double it cos babies poop, vomitt and stop you getting the washing done. Plus a couple of little hats, and cardigans. As many outfits as you want, anything from 1 to 50 is normal!! And a coat or snowsuit depending on due date.

One thing you can do to save money and get a lot of what you need in one go is to go onto Ebay and get a bundle of clothes in the correct size/gender. Buying newborn and 0-3 month clothes means if you ebay well you can get a load of Next, Mothercare, M&S ect clothes that have hardly been worn for a very cheap price.

We have 12 vest and sleep suits, only one set of clothes ATM but we got alot of bibs as I know we will use a lot of them

Even if u dont buy a lot there is nothing stopping u popping out with babu and grabbing some stuff u need better to be safe than sorry thou
Can never have too many

i recommend having 10-14 of each vests, all-in-ones, sleepsuits etc. Also, bare in mind the time of year so cardigans, fleecy coats, hats, mittens, snow suits.
Layers are good as you can add/take off as required.

Like others have said, its worth looking on ebay for bundles which work out cheaper if you dont mine second hand. x

another reason we are going to buy/recieve a lot of clothing is because we live in an apartment and dont have our own washer and dryer. we have to use the laundry room near the office for apartment. and for one load of laundry it costs $2.75 to wash and dry one load... thats a lot. and i really dont feel lik doing laundry every other day

I looked at loads of recommended amounts of things and they all say 2 cardigans. My mum thinks I'll need 2 or 3 a day because of baby being sick on them. She'll be a winter baby maybe my mum is right.

I'd like to know what you think.

Im working on having two weeks worth of clothing for washing purposes, I dont want to be washing every 5 mins and makes things easier if we go away etc.

The reason why I am doubling up on vests and babygros is due to the fact as babies can be changed up to 3 times a day if having a sicky day, so working on an average of 2 a day seems reasonable.
So im planning on having 2 vests for each day which will be 24 vests , 12 sleepsuits/babygros, and a few nice 'outfits' as in they could be a nice babygro- hubby brought a tigger one which will be nice enough for outings et etc.
I want all my 0-3 stuff sorted as being due in jan (could well be over xmas/new year period) it will be quite hard to pop to the shops if weather is bad to buy extras.

I would buy mainly 0-3 months, we have quite a bit of onesies.... like 19 of them...., but they range from newborn to 6 months. I believe I have about 6 for each size (NB, 0-3, 3-6). The main thing your little one will be wearing are onesies and sleepers. I also bought a few pants seeing as I am due in January... probably about 6 of those actually. I would aim at 6-10 of each for each size, but I would focus more on 0-3 than newborn as sometimes babies outgrow them in a week and sometimes they are bigger at birth.... like some of my newborn only go to 7lbs.... which doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room. I have 3 hats, and 6 bibs. Good luck xx

If you are having a baby shower then i would definitely say wait until after so u can see what you're missing or don't have enough of. With my first i got soo many gifts that i didn't have to buy any clothes or diapers for about 4 months. I plan to wait until after my baby shower for this one as well. It's not about relying on other ppl to buy things for your baby it's simply that in most cases your family and friends are so excited for you they just want to buy things and will even without cause or occasion. Now as far as what you will you use the first few months you wont really need much so plan for about 7-10 onesies, sleep and play wear. You'll need atleast a couple of hats for the colder days and of course socks. I wouldn't really recommend the size newborn as it will only fit a couple of weeks. Mine actually never fit into them as he weighed just under 9lbs when he was born. plan on buying mostly 0-3 and 6-9 for longer lasting wear. Probably best not to buy anything too expensive since they outgrow it so quickly some outfits may only get worn a couply of times.
