My five month old ds is in hospital. They weighed him yesterday and he was 6.11kg at 23 weeks old. He was weighed at 17 weeks by the health visitor and was 6.05kg so in 6 weeks has only gained a tiny amount. The nurse I told this morning just dismissed me saying it's because they were done on different scales. But I think that's crap because ds1 had failure to thrive and it didn't matter what scales he was weighed on they always compared them and worried if e dropped centiles. I'm going to mention it to his paed when she comes round to see him but wanted to know if anyone else has had this experience? Is it just because of the scales or do I need to push and stand my ground? Xx

Hi I cant see how using different scales would make a difference. I would certainly mention it too the doctor. I hope your LO is ok? Xx

I have had problems because of scales. They weren't calibrated properly and made it look like she had dropped 13% off her birth weight. They brought round some different scales the next day which showed she'd only lost 5.5% so it can happen. I'd see if they've got another set of scales to try.

I hope your little one is ok Hun :hugs:
I do think scales can make a difference as my oldest little girl has always gained weight well, every time she is weighed she has gained except once when she was weighed on hospital chair scales instead of the one the health visitors use and they said she had gained no weight at all in 4 months which definitely was wrong. When she was weighed by Hv it did show a gain. I'm not sure which were correct as you'd think hospital ones would be more accurate. Maybe Hv scales are a bit out as they are carried/ bashed around more?

I don't know if it's quite the same, but hubby and I have our own separate scales at home, and there is usually a 2-3 lb difference between them.

If you're concerned though, definitely push it! Better to be safe and make sure everything is all right. :hugs:

I agree also that scales can make a big difference. I have seen 1 lb difference which can make a big difference when they are so small. I would most likely trust the hospital because I figure they are more likely to calibrate their scale more often.

Not sure about different sets of scales but when I took DS for his heel prick test and they weighed him the midwife/HV was very concerned about his weight loss when she weighed him with the scales on the bed but then she moved them onto the floor and he had only lost 1lb, so scale position seems to make a difference

Thank you all. A different nurse is taking it seriously. He'll be weighed again before we leave the hospital.

I had posted a reply earlier gymknickers but it must have posted. He's in with a severe uti so on I.v antibiotics. He had a kidney scan this afternoon and they've found a problem with his kidneys but won't tell me what until yorkhill children's hospital have called them back with their plan of action. So frustrating knowing that thy know what's wrong but won't tell me xx

Sorry Sethsmummy, only just seen this. Oh no poor baby! I really hope he's ok and you've gotten some answers? I can't believe they aren't keeping you in the loop, that must be so difficult. Thinking of you and hope he is ok.

Thank you ❤️

I got the results this morning. He has a large fluid cyst on his bladder just above where the uretar (I think that's the one that goes between kidney and bladder) so it's blocking the urine from passing properly which in turn means his uretar is dilated and he also has an extra tube between kidney and bladder that shouldn't be there. So we have to wait till Monday for children's hospital urologist to call back and see what they want to do. This afternoon they want to see him pee to make sure he pees properly xx
