my son seems to be hungry every 2 hours... sometimes i will give him as much as 4 ounces but then i am worried that i may be over-feeding him... i'd also like him to last 3 hours if possible between feedings (so i can get more sleep too haha) but not sure how to stretch this out.... anyway i just wanted to get a sense of how much formula at 3 weeks is normal to feed and how often? i feel like i am burning through formula, and i can only buy the expensive ready to feed formula as per my doctor (he will not allow me to switch to powder until 4 months for some reason). thanks for any advice/input!

On what is your doctor basing his decision on? That sounds a bit silly aren't exactly the same thing but one is just premixed? What does the formula people recommend, sometimes my LO will protest after the bottle is finished and just give her dummy (paci) to finish that suck urge. three week old prob need feeding every 2-3 hours as they have tiny little bellies:winkwink:

Apparently after opening a can of formula it's not sterile, or at least this is the reason the midwives told me for not being able to use it. We got a couple cases of the canned liquid stuff (that you mix with water) but once it's done I'm gonna say screw it and go powder anyways.

I have an older son who was a little bit preemie and more at risk for getting sick and such than this one is and he had no problems with it at all and it will be so much more convenient for us not to mention making night time or not at home feedings much easier (can pre-measure powder ahead of time to just make it on the spot when you need it and no need to warm it up from being in the fridge)

I understand the reasoning behind the recommendations but for my family in both the ability to make things easier since we do have an older child to take care of too, as well as to ease the cost since we have a limited income we're just gonna make the parental decision and go with powder.

By the way, my little guy is 1 week old today.

My LO was on 5oz every 3 hours then

My Lo is 3 weeks old today and she eats about 4oz every 3-4 hours. We also use powder formula.

My little girl is 4weeks old but was 7weeks early so is really minus 3 weeks just now :) she weighs 6lb 6oz now and takes 4oz every 3-4 hours x

DD usually ate about 4oz every 2-3 hours. A nutritionist we saw (because we were signing up for WIC) said that was way too much but if you research online that seems to be pretty normal :) I tried cutting her down to 2 like the lady told me but she acted like I was starving her so I just ignored what the lady said and listened to what my LO was telling me.

I recommend watching the YouTube video about baby language. After we watched that it was WAY easier to figure out whats she wanted and we actually wound up feeding her a little less because we realizes we were feeding her when she wanted something else. Search on YouTube for it, it's priscilla dunstan five words baby's use or something like that :)

My lil guy was the same @ that age& now he is 7 weeks , he still eats between 4 & 5 ounces every 3 hours yet at night, he only wakes up twice between the hours of 9pm&6am *smiles* . He is on formula for hungrier babys &thriving . Although I wouldn't switch ur lo without advice . Good luck

My daughter is 3 weeks and has 4oz every 2-3 hrs, sometimes she does leave about an ounce or so but will drink it about half an hour later. She goes about 4-5hrs in the night tho x

thanks all, i have been feeding him 4 ounces now without hesitation... i wish he'd give me 5 hours at night though... it seems like every 3 hours he is up like clockwork! and if he is awake then by 2 hours he is already fussing for another bottle.... This is my first so at what point should I expect him to go longer in between feedings?
