I've just started weaning the traditional way. Af first we started with a few spoon fulls of baby rice for breakfast and tastes of sweet potato etc at lunch. Now she is getting more hungry. She loves babyrice in the morning and is having dinner and pudding at lunch time.

I was just wondering what quantity of puree I should be giving a six month old? I'm worried about under and over feeding her.

When should I start to reduce her milk. I've kept her on 5 x 7oz but now I think she's ready to increase the food and reduce the milk. A friend told me to keep her on the same milk until she was 7 months, does this sound right to anyone?

I'm really enjoying weaning, I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

At 6 months, milk is still a baby's main source of nutrition. Solid food is more of a compliment and to get them used to flavours, textures and such so dont worry too much about cutting down milk intake. You'll probably find that your LO does it herself over time anyway.
I found with Evie that establishing the 3 meals a day nice and slowly was the best way. I tried too quickly at first and she dropped her milk intake quite alot so I had to start all over again just to make sure she was having enough milk!
Then, once the meals were established, gradually increasing the amount she had per meal.
Once babies are on 3 meals a day, their milk intake should be around 18-21oz and that includes milk from yoghurts, porridge etc.
Evie is now on 3 medium sized meals, and 3 7oz bottles a day. She averages around 24-26oz of milk per day, that includes the milk in yoghurts etc.

I'd say take it nice and slowly, dont rush. Increase amounts slowly. At 6 months, Evie was eating around half a Stage 1 baby jar of food per meal, but she didnt have any puddings. We introduced those when she was having 3 set meals per day. Now she eats half a Stage 3 baby jar per meal with a fromage frais after :)

Weaning is fun, I love to watch Evie trying new stuff :)

We started weaning Anna at 5.5 months.

She is now 8 months and on 3 small meals a day - all around 80g each- so about half a jar for comparison (well, depending on the size of jar!) My HV said thats great as I was worrying that she wasnt having enough but her weight is exactly what it should be.

We started with tastes and then moved to about an ounce (30g) portion. I slowly increased the amounts.

Anna has not really dropped her milk intake - never was a big milk drinker either. She has about 22oz a day over 5 bottles.

And dont stress about it all - they dont need food right now - just make sure she is still having her milk.

It sounds like you do know what you are doing so stick with it. I would increase the amounts and then found she wasnt taking as much milk so dropped an oz off the next bottle etc.

It is great fun isnt it!!:flower:

the boys were 4.5 months when they started weaning - we did it very slowly. At six months they were on five bottles and two meals a day - baby porridge for breakfast with fruit puree and half a har each for tea. Now they are on 2 bottles (first and last thing) and three meals a day (wheatabix, banana, snadwiches, yogurts, and just our food mashed) - HTH x
