How often did you 6 month old eat?

Zoe had her 6 month check-up today and her dr. is encouraging us to start more solids. Right now he wants us to do cereal in the morning and veggies in the afternoon.

My question is how often should they be eating? Right now she has a bottle every 3 hours or so. So I'm assuming I just replace two of the bottles with the solids like he suggested and then continue on the same schedule with bottles for the rest of the feedings? Does this sound right or is she eating too often for her age?

My lo eats 4 oz bottle every 2-3 hours and I give solids I between not to replace.

If you replace bottles with solids she will be getting even less. You want to be giving solids in between bottles or after them. Not cutting them out. She will drop bottles when she is ready herself. Probably not yet.

My daughter has a bottle every 4 hours and 2 foods I between I dont replace bottles xx

I havent even really introduced them fully yet. Today, for example, she never had any food. She has 5 bottles of milk a day, occasionally 6 depending on how awful she sleeps at night. I make up 6oz each bottle but she usually leaves about 2oz in each.

I really should crack on and be a bit more consistent with foods, but she had me sooo tired every day that I really struggle to be bothered! (Awful, I know!)

As pp have said don't replace bottles with food.

My LO is still having the same amount of milk feeds during the day, even now at 8 months. He has dropped night feeds, I think due to eating a lot of food now as well as drinking loads of milk during the day. I call him my dustbin lol.

So do bottle in the morning when she wakes up, then offer breakfast half an hour or an hour later, and so on.

My LO LOVES her food....and her milk.

I wouldn't have been able to cut out the milk even if I wanted to at that age...

Even if she ate TON, she'll still want her milk... Literally scream for it if it was time.

She has reflux though, so she doesn't take more then 4oz at a time.

At 6m, I was pretty inconsistent feeding solids too. I offered her enough, but really it was more for 'fun.'

Now at over a year, she has dropped her milk almost completely to my utter surprise! I'm still feeding her formula though, as I have extra tubs from me hoarding when there was a sale.

I don't see the rush in me converting her to cows milk.

Thanks everyone. I feel much better about it now. I really don't want to replace with solids as she is still getting used to solids and doesn't eat much of them so I was worried about her not getting enough. I'll feed her the solids first and then give her a bottle so she gets as much as she needs.

Solids are complementary to milk. Milk is the main source of nutrition until 1 yr. LO feeds 2-3 hourly and has breakfast (cereal/bagel/toast) around 11am and tea around 4-5pm (tonight was fish pie - mashed potato with chopped small carrots, parsnip, sweet potato & flaked cod).

My LO was still nursing every 2 hours during the day and not eating any solids. She didn't take to solids until around 8 months and didn't really slow down on her milk intake until after 12 months.

At 6 months, we were just doing one meal a day (and it was all finger foods so she really wasn't eating much until about 7.5 months). I think we added in a second meal at 7 months and were definitely on 3 meals by 7.5-8 months. There really is no rush.

Usually it's recommended to do milk before food about 1-2 hours later. That way they take plenty of milk and food just tops them up. There's no rush to get them on solids and it's silly for your doctor to even try to tell you that all babies should be doing the same thing by a certain age or to replace milk with solids. That's definitely not the going medical advice. Just do what she seems ready for and keep the milk going as well because she needs that.
