really need to know girls, as my mw is too busy to make our appointment today!!

baby is three weeks old today. she passed her meconium (sp?) in the womb during labour. then she didn't poo for 12 days, she did 3 on that day! then she did 1 more 2 days later. she's now not pooed for 8 days.

mw is supposed to be monitoring this, she was concerned. (obviously not too concerned...)

i've read that bf babies can go a long time without poo...i would like to hear your experiences of poo and bf babies..

(PS sorry for writing poo so many times...:dohh:)

When i BF Bella when she was first born she passed meconium for a day and then didn't poo for 14 days. She ended up in hospital having tests and x-rays to ensure everything was ok with her bowels etc (although she had lost a lot of weight and hadn't gained enough to go above her birth weight even) and in the end was given a suppository to make her go and when she did it was normal poo not hard poo as if she was constipated (sorry, TMI) so the consultant decided that it was ok for her to go this long. We tried everything to help her along before the suppository though...cool boiled water, me drinking lots of fruit juice, lactulose etc and nothing would help. Make sure that you don't get fobbed off with the usual "BF babies tend to poo less frequently" line that i heard a million times and they actually listen to your concerns. She used to strain and cry and everything yet MW's and drs said this was normal?! hopefully things get sorted for you

Skyler poos 4-5 times per day.He obviously got his dad's metabolism! He once skipped a day and did not poo and surely made up for it the next day.I think only formula babies goes several days without pooing.

Newborns have several stools a day that are soft and the consistency of seedy mustard, especially if breastfed. Formula-fed infants usually have fewer, firmer and darker stools

Got this info from the Dr.Sears website

she's made her birth weight already, and doesn't cry or appear to be trying to pass anything...what happened after the suppository? did everything start happening normally?

it stalled for about another 5 days and then she pooed again and then another few days without pooing. After that i had to switch to formula due to her still being 13oz less then her birth weight at 4 weeks old so after that she was pooing for england!

i thought i'd read, that as there's not any 'waste' as such in breast milk, she could just be sucking in just enough to keep her growing, but not produce any waste...was i dreaming?

hi, thought i would add my bit.
Brooke is 4 weeks old today and is breastfed. She does 2-3 mustard yellow poops a day. I think she's only had one day when she didn't poo.

I would phone your health visitor hun and say you really need her to come today. If she still won't come then phone up your labour ward, where you gave birth. They will be able to advise and at least put your mind at rest.

The hosp i gave birth in were excellent and said that if i had any problems and couldn't get hold of the health visitor, just to call them up.

This is what my MW said was happening with Bella. She advised me that when she is full and comes off to express as much as i have left (if not empty) and then give her whatever i've got in a cup or a bottle to top her up a bit. maybe try this?

my mw also suggested this..but i'm finding that practically all day time she 'grazes'. so she feeds, sleeps pretty ,much constantly, never snoozing for more than 20 mins.
so time for pumping just ain't there, also when would i get to give it her? (did try it once and my pump didn't get any out. )
she rarely drains a boob in one sitting, even at night. (she sleeps well at night, waking for one or two feeds)
when the mw said she was too busy today to come, ithought maybe she doesn't think there is much of a problem...?
i have a low iron count (had to have a transfusion because of this) maybe my milk isn't up to scratch?

jack poos about 5 times a day roughly sometime more x

Jaiden is now 5 weeks old and at the moment he poo's once a day (sometimes it fills 2 nappies as he is in small size). Although today he only had a tiny little bit wasnt even worth a nappy change right away.

Though when he is on his infacol he poo's more as it seems to go right through him.

I have been told that breast fed babies don't take aslong to digest their food as they take out the nutrients they need straight away and the rest goes straight out.

So my lo has tons of wee's... aslong as they have wet nappies in the day whether its wee or poo there shouldnt be a problem.

When I took him to the dr's a week or so ago about his colic, I was told if he doesnt poo its fine aslong as he is weeing. And if he starts having hard poo's then he needs checking out. But otherwise all will be fine x

Give it straight after a feed if LO isn't emptying the boob. Sounds just like Bella. I'd literally be feeding every hour for 45mins as she was too lazy to suck quickly and then when she'd come off she'd doze for 15mins and then want feeding again. Try hand expressing as this is easier at first and whatever you get (even if its an oz or half an oz) give to her as its all a bonus and will help with pooing. Make sure that when you feed you are drinking at the same time as its a good reminder of when to do it. I was told that if you can manage a pint everytime then that will help and make sure you are eating plenty of good foods like fruit and vegetables etc.

she pooed yesterday evening and in the night...but...it was quite solid???i'm going to the drs today about something else, so i'll ask him about the hard poo when i go. it's never bloody ending! i was just happy about the quantity of poo, now i have to worry about the quality LOL
