I thought you'd all get a kick out of this one... while I was in labor with my 3rd baby things were going quite well. I went to the hospital about 7 PM and was about 3 CM.
I got in the hospital bed and things started to get a lot more painful.
About 9 PM I was crying for an epidural. The nurse checked me and told me I was already 6 CM so they couldn't do the epidural, but could give me a spinal block.
The Anesthesiologist came in and told me to sit up and be completely still. Contractions were coming in about 30 seconds apart and lasting a good 20 seconds each. So there I was perfectly still and perfectly silent while he did all the prep, got my back ready and put the spinal block in.
I should say the only way I was able to be completely still was by chanting the mantra "the path from my womb to my arms is short, open and wide" over and over again in my head.
As soon as the spinal block kicked in I felt so much relief! It was like I was sleeping in a cloud! So I laid down on my side and as soon as I did the Anesthesiologist and the nurse had a look of shock on their face. Lo and behold, my son already had his head poking out and he was staring at the Anesthesiologist!
I really love looking back on this because I remembered that even though birth can be painful, I was able to reign it in and own it by using that mantra. If I can be silent and completely still while my baby's head is coming out then I can do anything!
